OMG WHAT A MASTERPIECE I JUST DISCOVERED! I keep watching this movie again and again and I cannot get enough of it. For me it is the best movie I have seen in a very very long time (read years) The thing is though, you have to watch it again or else you do not understand it fully. For example it is only after the second time I watched that I understood that Sarah Ali Khan also plays the character of her mum and that her nanie really had to do with her parents killed. Oh I LOVE LOVE LOVE this film wich I saw accindently while flying to Mumbai from Amsterdam. Now I am back home in Amsterdam and thank God I found it online and I keep watching it again and again, I just cannot get enough of this movie. I also went to watch Pathan as it is out now and compare to this movie, I would rate Pathan 0 stars! I had to go out of the theater as it was hurting my eyes and ears!

Atrangi Re movie review: Sara Ali Khan, Dhanush are soul of a unique love story, Akshay Kumar adds the Midas touch

Atrangi re movie review: starring sara ali khan, dhanush and akshay kumar in lead roles, atrangi re boasts of a casting coup which can just not go wrong..

Atrangi Re lives up to its title. Directed by Aanand L Rai, it's refreshingly different, unique love story that so beautifully breaks through the clutter. It's not remotely close to how we have visualised or seen romances on screen over the years. The film delves deep into relations we hold onto, emotions that are left behind, the denial we often live in and the acceptance that follows after a lot of pain. The story subtly touches upon the issue of mental health as well but at no points gets preachy. Starring Sara Ali Khan , Dhanush and Akshay Kumar in lead roles, Atrangi Re boasts of a casting coup which just cannot go wrong. Though with energetic stars like Sara and Akshay, you think the story might go a bit over-the-top, but the director maintains a balance so brilliantly that none of his characters overshadow each other. Each one of them — even the supporting actors including Vishu's best friend (Ashish Verma) and Rinku's grandmother (Seema Biswas) — stand out in their parts. Akshay the superstar, allows Sara to take the forefront, while Dhanush complements her energy.

Atrangi Re movie review: Akshay Kumar, Dhanush, Sara Ali Khan on a poster. (Instagram)

The story revolves around Rinku Sooryavanshi (Sara) and Vishu (Dhanush) being married to each other forcefully. On their way to Vishu's hometown, they come to an understanding that they'd follow their own paths because they're not meant to be together--and also because Vishu is getting engaged in two days. Now enters Sajjad Ali (Akshay Kumar) who Rinku is in love with. How Rinku deals with the dilemma of being in love with Sajjad and also having feelings for Vishu at the same time is what Aanand L Rai tells us through this film, but in a rather unconventional way.

The screenplay of Atrangi Re is perhaps one of its USPs after the music. Himanshu Sharma's writing takes you to a different world where love has a different meaning. The scenes have been stitched in a manner that they make you cry and smile at the same time. Atrangi Re is free from any cliches of Bollywood films. It doesn't stick to the tried-and-tested formula that we usually see in love stories. It is not your usual boy meets girl kind of a story. Neither is it about a couple who got married off forcefully, deciding to give their relationship a chance. It's way beyond what you and I could think of.

In the climax, you actually realise that the film deserved much more attention than what you would have given until that point. The story unfolds at quite a smooth pace without any needless subplots. Though honestly, I would have wanted to know a bit more of Vishu's background, his parents and fiance. That, I feel, would have allowed us to relate to his character better as we do with Rinku's.

In the end credits of Atrangi Re, Sara Ali Khan features at the top of the cast members, followed by Dhanush and then Akshay Kumar. This pretty much sums up how Sara is the soul of this film and holds her ground throughout. As Rinku, a small town girl, she's crazy, feisty, thick-skinned and quite the rebel, yet emotionally attached to her parents. This is Sara's fifth release, and you'd be mighty impressed to witness her range as an actor. The Bihari dialect that she’s picked in the film is on point and she never lets it go off track. Her performance in the song Chaka Chak is definitely her best so far. And not to mention her performance in the final act, which just pierces through your heart.

Playing the calm to Rinku's storm is Vishu, a doctor. Dhanush looks confident in his part and since his Bollywood debut with Raanjhanaa eight years ago, he has quite fitted into the Bollywood scheme of things. Assign him some dance steps, add quirk to his character or give him some funny antics to pull off, and he aces it. However, Sara and Dhanush together as an onscreen couple don't really trigger any sparks with their chemistry. It's quite bland to say the least. Then there's a dialogue in the film when Dhanush is talking and Sara says “Gaali mat do (don’t swear)” to which he replies, “Tamil mein bol raha hu (I’m speaking Tamil)”. Well, it's time Bollywood gets over with this obsession of including stereotypical humour in a bid to add a comic punch.

Also read: Dhanush says Sonam Kapoor was better co-star compared to Sara Ali Khan, she reacts: 'Not offensive at all'

Akshay, who’s a magician in the film, brings the Midas touch to the story, playing a pivotal role. Call it an extended cameo or whatever, he doesn't let it affect his performance onscreen. Atrangi Re is Aanand and Akshay's first-ever collaboration and it definitely has upped the expectations for their upcoming projects — Raksha Bandhan and Gorkha.

Last but not the least, Atrangi Re's music is just pure gold and all credit goes to AR Rahman’s compositions and background score, and Irshad Kamil's lyrics. Each song sets a different mood, the essence of which you want to take back home. From Dhanush's Love Me Little Little and Akshay's Garda Udda Diya to the soulful tracks, Atrangi Re brings back the magic of musical love stories. Watch it on Disney+ Hotstar from December 24.

Atrangi Re Review: The Ambition Is Big, But It Doesn’t Translate

Director:  Aanand L Rai Writers: Aanand L Rai, Himanshu Sharma Cast: Akshay Kumar , Dhanush & Sara Ali Khan Cinematography: Pankaj Kumar Editor: Hemal Kothari

Streaming on : Disney+ Hotstar

The thing to admire about director Aanand L Rai and writer Himanshu Sharma is that they are always willing to go out on a limb.  In their attempt to create soaring, sweeping, aching tales, they wilfully flirt with the ridiculous. Like fearless trapeze artists, they don't look down to see if there is a safety net or not. Which is both a good thing and a bad thing.

You recall their last collaboration  Zero  in which the story begins in Meerut and somehow makes its way to Mars.  Atrangi Re  has the same DNA. Here, they concoct a love triangle which isn't what it seems. The story takes unexpected turns. It hopscotches across the country and touches on myriad subjects including groom kidnapping in Bihar, honour killing, mental illness, magic. This film is about the transformative power of love. Aanand and Himanshu celebrate the purity of the emotion and the beauty in being atrangi or eccentric. The ambition is laudable but the result is a bit of a mess.

The tone of the film veers toward fantastical.  Akshay Kumar plays a magician named Sajjad whose signature trick is lighting himself on fire. Some sequences are set in a circus. In one scene, he is trying to make the Taj Mahal disappear. Aanand and Himanshu aren't too interested in logic and having a character who is a conjurer gives them more leeway. The sequences with Sajjad have a fairy tale-like quality. The lights and colours pop off the screen – the cinematography is by Pankaj Kumar who also shot the stunning  Tumbbad .

The flamboyance extends to Rinku, a fierce, headstrong girl who is forcibly married off by her family to a stranger. She asks him his name the morning after. Rinku is impetuous and aggressive – her introduction scene has her flinging soda bottles – but also lost. Her parents died when she was a little girl. She has grown up hankering for affection. Her husband Vishu attempts to heal her scars.  Though the speed at which he gets over his abduction and comes to care for his new wife is startling. This is a story about a love so intense that it transcends notions of reality and illusion.

The trouble is that the film is unable to transcend its own silliness. A story this complex required both – sharper writing and a lighter touch. It also required a much more sophisticated understanding of mental illness. Here we get Vishu's friend Madhu repeatedly declaring: I'm a psychiatrist. I know women. In one scene, he casually clubs together schizophrenics, patients with bipolar disorder and others. It's an ignorant and dangerous portrayal.

Though the film is centred on Sara Ali Khan, it is Dhanush who does the heavy lifting.  The actor expertly pulls off comedy, longing, desperation, frustration and heartbreak.  There is a lovely scene in which Vishu rants in Tamil to Rinku. Neither she nor many of us understand what he is saying but his eyes reveal the depth of his feelings and his anguish.  Dhanush is terrific. Though inexplicably, once again, Aanand and Himanshu push the actor into  Raanjhana  stalker territory – at one point, Vishu is breaking bottles on his head to prove his love. And some of it is played for comedy. As is mental illness.

Sara Ali Khan attacks her role with sincerity but this is a tough one to pull off. Rinku is grappling with serious issues including emotional abuse by her extended family. But the film's treatment of these issues undermines the gravity of her situation. Rinku comes off as the love child of Geet from  Jab We Met  and Bobby Batliwala Grewal from  Judgementall Kya Hai . Sara also has to deliver on the glamour quotient so she dances – like a dream – in the fabulous 'Chaka Chak' song and goes through the film wearing Manish Malhotra-designed lehenga cholis, which give us a peek at the sculpted abs. Meanwhile the Bihari accent comes and goes as do the expressions. In scenes of heightened emotion, her face reveals the strain.

Akshay Kumar helicopters in and out of the story, like a celestial saviour. There isn't much he has to do except turn on the elder statesman charm. And despite the big twist in the tale, there are scenes that allude to romance between him and Sara, which are uncomfortable to watch because there is a 28-year age gap between the two. The real star of  Atrangi Re  is A. R. Rahman .  His beautiful songs – especially 'Rait Zara Si' – help to smoothen the many bumps in the story.

In  Zero , Shah Rukh Khan 's character Bauaa Singh says: sapne size dekh kar nahin aate.  Like that film, here too, you can feel the maker's intent and his commitment to dreaming big. But it doesn't translate.

You can watch  Atrangi Re on Disney+ Hotstar.

Atrangi Re Movie Review: So Complicated, Yet So Simple! A Twisted Love Triangle With More Than Three Angles

The brilliance of himanshu sharma's script is that it doesn't rely much on 'the twist' as it keeps building to one soul-fatiguing climax..

movie review of atrangi re

Star Cast: Dhanush, Sara Ali Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ashish Verma

Director: Aanand L Rai

Atrangi Re Movie Review!

What’s Good: It’s a twisted love triangle with its edge so sharp that it busts all the perceptions of “What romance should be?” & the urge of finding someone as hopeless as romantic as Dhanush

What’s Bad: It makes you cry but fails to make toh laugh apart from a couple of funny sequences

Loo Break: Definitely, not during the songs!

Watch or Not?: This will test your patience at times but trust me, it’s all for the better!

Available On: Disney+ Hotstar

Runtime: 138 minutes

Language: Hindi

Okay, so, before we get into the story let me be as clear as possible, I won’t be able to explain it fully keeping the twist & thrills intact. So, whatever I write about the story, take that as just a fraction of what’s in the film. The story revolves around Rinku (Sara Ali Khan) who is madly in love with her magician boyfriend Sajjad Ali (Akshay Kumar). Due to the obvious cast-clash, Rinku’s toxic family does her ‘Jabariya Shaadi’ (forced marriage) by kidnapping a groom for her named Vishu (Dhanush).

Vishu, a polite & obedient doctor, before landing in this situation was all set to raid his girlfriend’s wedding to make a heroic entry making it memorable for them. But, fate brings Vishu & Rinku together who ultimately fall for each other. This leads to a love triangle between Vishu, Rinku & Sajjad (I’m making it sound simple to not spoil anything, trust me it’s not) and it’s a lot more than which guy would get the girl in the end. (Phew! I managed to tell the crux without revealing anything).

Atrangi Re Movie Review

Atrangi Re Movie Review: Script Analysis

Think of a love triangle, now imagine all the permutations-combinations you can think of and what could happen in the lives of those three people to get till a result, Himanshu Sharma’s story of Atrangi Re won’t fit even in a single aspect of whatever you just predicted. The script majorly highlights PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) backed by a tormenting misery of a certain character in the film. It falls in the ‘so complicated yet so simple’ category of stories as the twist, which might get monotonous & unconvincing for a few as the film progresses, won’t let anyone leave the cinema hall with a half-hearted viewpoint.

The brilliance of Sharma’s script is that it doesn’t rely much on ‘the twist’ as it keeps building to one soul-fatiguing climax just before it makes you smile before leaving. The entire film is just a rush of emotions ranging from “oh, f*ck that’s so heartbreaking” to “what is even happening on-screen?” and trust me Sharma & Aanand L Rai manage to put all the pieces back together to wrap up this intricating piece of art.

Does it ever fall short? Yes! Where? Comedy! Given the track record of what extent Rai & Sharma (Tanu Weds Manu & Returns, first half of Zero ) could go to tickle your funny bone, this is nowhere near it. I also get how much the story is supposed to rely upon has to rely on drama, but there was an incredible amount of scope.

Supremely promising cinematographer Pankaj Kumar (Haider, Tumbbad , and upcoming – Brahmastra) adds his magical fresh touch enhancing the look & feel of the film. Rai and Sharma complete their trusted trio with editor Hemal Kothari, who had an extremely complicated job this time in stitching together a convoluted screenplay without many bumps.

Atrangi Re Movie Review: Star Performance

Dhanush and Sara Ali Khan remain to be the soul, heart of the film with AR Rahman’s music (more on that below) acting as blood to keep them alive and pumping. Dhanush just owns every frame he’s injecting pure conviction in every scene. There’s a beautifully penned scene in which he speaks in Tamil, without any subtitles but even if you don’t know the language, you’ll still get what he’s trying to say & that’s Dhanush for you.

Despite Dhanush’s exceptional presence, it’s Sara Ali Khan’s visible efforts that cements the hope of how better she could get with a proper script in hand. It wasn’t just the effortless physical attributes of Rinku that she becomes adept at, but also the modulation of her accent that she skillfully controls.

Amid all the acting and drama, Akshay Kumar, unfortunately, remains to be the weakest link of all three. It’s not because his character doesn’t comparatively have equal depth, it’s just too routine stuff from someone who himself has set the standards too high. Ashish Verma, playing the role of Dhanush’s friend, is wasted and it’s more annoying because we’ve seen the kind of talent he possesses to handle comedy which remains to be unused here.

Atrangi Re Movie Review

Atrangi Re Movie Review: Direction, Music

Aanand L Rai takes the most simple route to reach an extremely complicated destination as far as the storytelling is concerned. He makes sure to keep the intrigue alive most of the time building things on the go while moving towards the finish point. He always tries to keep a proper balance between humour & comedy but this one remains to be his most unique attempt at narrating a story.

Rai creates history by ending the movie with “A film by AR Rahman” and thankfully so because the songs bring everything together. Rait Zara Si & Tumhein Mohabat Hai will be on my playlist forever. Following Rahman’s style, the songs aren’t mere melodies but act as extended dialogues to the narrative.

Atrangi Re Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Atrangi Re is way way more than being your routine love triangle. A very welcoming change for Bollywood to learn how you can tell an age-old story in so many different ways.

Three and a half stars!

I saw the movie exactly when it was released on Disney plus hotstar 24 dec& 12am. I usually sleep around 9 pm but i like Akshay kumar much so that i couldn’t wait for the next day and me to get free to watch that movie. I watched the movie twice back to back sleep around 4 am &i can even watch it again .Now coming directly to the movie…..I can’t even imagine how this kind of creativity comes in the mind of Aanandlrai sir,soo beautifully written by Himanshu sir and exquisitely lived by Dhanush sir, Innocently performed by Sara ma’am and magically supported by Akshay sir. I love Akshay personality and he has given her everything in this movie, I strongly believe that Dhanush outperform her previous performances. He was a treat to watch when he was crying in the movie, and watching sara laugh was something to cherish in this movie…. It’s 2021 best movie for me &if it would have released on theatre, it could completely blown away the box office . I highly recommend you all to watch it once . This movie has proved that Sara is a shining star all she need is a good direction of directors like Aanandlrai.

Atrangi Re Movie Review: Dhanush steals the show in Akshay Kumar, Sara Ali Khan film

Atrangi Re Movie Review: Dhanush steals the show in Akshay Kumar, Sara Ali Khan film

Aanand L Rai is the master of weaving simple emotions into larger-than-life-aspirational storylines. Be it the journey of the free-spirited Tanu in Tanu Weds Manu or Kundan and Zoya’s odd love story in Raanjhana, Rai has always given emotion precedence over any other element in his films. So, it comes as no surprise when he decided to experiment with a new subject and give it his unique layered treatment in his latest offering, Atrangi Re, currently streaming on Disney+Hotstar.

In Atrangi Re, Rai stays true to the title and creates characters and situations that are extremely atrangi - odd. Rinku (Sara Ali Khan) has a habit of running away from her home in search of her lover Sajjad (Akshay Kumar). She believes that he’s waiting for her and the only way to manifest his love is to elope and marry him. Nothing wrong with the idea right? But hold on, Rinky’s family has other plans. They decide to forcefully marry her off to a Tamil Brahmin Vishnu (Dhanush) to basically get rid of her and ensure she never returns.

What follows is a love triangle between Rinky-Sajjad-Vishnu, unlike anything you could imagine. And yes, imagination has a very big place in Atrangi Re’s very tricky premise. There is a massive twist that Rai brings to the table, which turns out to be a pivotal turning point in the narrative.

Atrangi Re is a risk on many accounts. For one, it pairs two veteran actors, Dhanush and Akshay, known for their acting chops, opposite Sara Ali Khan, seemingly still struggling to carve her own niche. It is not so much of a risk for Sara as it is for Akshay. He takes on a character that many A-list actors in his age group would have simply refused (and we've heard that a few actually did politely pass on the role).

Akshay’s Sajjad is a quirky, comical, jester, a mad man who conjures up tricks from his circus hat and changes weather with a click of his fingers. Polar opposite to him is the modest Vishnu who is unknowingly caught in a drama he never signed up for. Dhanush is perfectly cast for this part and his performance is easily the strongest point of the film. Sara Ali Khan’s Rinku seems like a part written for the actress. Very similar to her ‘namaskar darshakon’ Instagram series, Rinku too has verbal diarrhoea, a lot of spunk and seems like a time bomb waiting to explode.

Sara walks a very tight rope in trying to balance the garish over-the-top Rinku with her almost childlike vulnerability. It definitely is one of the toughest characters to crack and Sara shines in many scenes where she lets go of the pressures of being in the frame with her seniors or wanting to play to the gallery with the colourful dialogues. The only trick she needs to master as an actor is - a lot of times - less is actually more.

Rai’s screenplay has always been his biggest strength. His characters bring life to even the dullest dialogue. However, in Atrangi Re, the entire film oscillates between the three pillars - Sara, Akshay and Dhanush. It would have been interesting to see supporting characters add more flavour to the storyline. Also, scenes involving Sara’s character and how Dhanush's Vishnu reacts to her big revelation can feel a bit misconstrued. Watch the film to know why we say so.

Love is the common thread that binds these three characters, but there are several moments where logic and reason are tossed out of the premise for the benefit of adding some melodrama. Also, the pace of the film, especially in the second half, does test your patience immensely.

Atrangi Re is a story of love, loss, grief, trauma and how a person navigates through all this and copes with what life has to offer. The film doesn't present a linear or singular point of view but lets the audience decide what to make of the choices these characters make in the last 20 minutes of the film. Atrangi Re is Aanand L Rai’s bravest attempt in storytelling, even braver than Zero, given the subject it deals with. It is heartening to see a director show passion about breaking new ground and experimenting with format and style, yet stick to his core belief in filmmaking. Atrangi Re deserves a watch for attempting something new. It is risky but also a welcome step in the right direction. Don’t hesitate to embrace the new.

'Atrangi Re' movie review: Dhanush, AR Rahman shine in a rather insipid love triangle

Towards the intermission point in Atrangi Re, there is a big reveal, the response to which determines the audience’s acceptance of the latest Aanand L Rai film. We see Akshay Kumar's Sajjad priming his horns to play the antagonist of sorts in the star-crossed love story of Vishu (Dhanush) and Rinku (Sara Ali Khan).

Akshay is visibly revelling in the idea of playing this OTT character, and beside him, we see a beaming Sara feeling the same, and we cut away to a bathroom stall where Dhanush invokes the Raanjhanaa title song and performs a quick dance. Basically, despite the ludicrousness of the central premise, all three actors have their versions of fun on screen. But there is only so much that spirited performances and a brilliant score can do when the writing is messy and all over the place.

Atrangi Re begins with a forced marriage between Rinku and Vishu. While Rinku is forced into marriage because she is forever trying to elope with the love of her life Sajjad, Vishu finds himself at the wrong place at the wrong time as he becomes victim to the now-infamous groom kidnapping in certain Indian states.

There is an unnecessary sense of urgency in the first few minutes of the film, and before things can even come to a much-needed pause, we are asked to take a leap of faith about Vishu harbouring feelings for Rinku.

Come on! Even Dhanush's exceptional histrionics in that "love proposal" scene can’t really fill in for the shallowness of the proceedings. Unlike the writing in Ranjhanaa, which gave us a sense of why Kundan was head-over-heels in love with Zoya, here we don’t really know what makes Vishu like Rinku.

Like, of course, she has a lot of spunk and a serious non-understanding of time, space, and privacy, which makes her the stuff of dreams for many of our heroes. However, Vishu’s transition from being plain irritated at her to becoming all doe-eyed around her is painfully coercive.

This weirdly magical journey is elevated by one of AR Rahman’s recent best works. Although a bulk of the songs are used to hasten the narrative of the first half, it is only with the power of this music that we embark on this middling journey. Also special mention to Pankaj Kumar’s colourful visuals that give Atrangi Re an almost fairytale-ish feel to it.

But one can not just shake off that feeling of incompleteness that stems from Atrangi Re’s writing choices. Of course, there is that “twist” that, well. isn’t as convoluted as the makers deem it to be. And when their ONE trump card isn’t groundbreaking enough, Atrangi Re ran the risk of becoming saddled with fatigue and it does so in an emphatic fashion.

For all its chest-thumping on inventiveness and refreshing outlook at the time-tested narrative of the vagaries of love, Atrangi Re doesn’t quite deliver on what was promised.

It actually feeds into stereotypes rather than break them, or at least skirt around them. While it is smart how Dhanush is cast as a doctor in this film, the use of his, and his friends’ medical expertise is milked for easy but unsmart laughs. Another unsmart thing is definitely how Rinku’s character arc develops.

Although Sara is earnest as Rinku, the role turns out to be too gimmicky for a film of this potential. However, the more underwritten part is that of Akshay Kumar, and despite a cherubic and upbeat performance, Sajjad doesn’t quite create the intentioned flutter.

Just like every Himanshu Sharma-Aanand L Rai collaboration, Atrangi Re too deals with an all-encompassing love that crosses all physical and mental boundaries. Just like all their films, the concept too is a fascinating one even if it borders on the old-fashioned.

However, despite a solid cast, brilliant music, and spectacular visuals, this time around the successful collaboration misses the target by quite a distance.

Just proclaiming the film is "funnily weird" isn't enough if it takes itself too seriously, and being neither funny nor weird, Atrangi Re settles down in a space that is just well... plain. And that's the worst thing that can happen to a world created by one of our most maverick writer-filmmaker duos.

Review: innumerable facepalm moments prove to be atrangi re's undoing, atrangi re has premiered on disney+hotstar..

Never mind how baffling or absurd a premise might seem, sometimes the success of a love story depends on how much it makes us care for its characters and root for their union. Atrangi Re, weirdly enough, never trusts us with being up, close and personal with its protagonists. Director Aanand L Rai and writer Himanshu Sharma always keep us at a safe distance, feeding us basic details and nudging us to respond accordingly.

Click on the play button below to listen to the full podcast.

The first time we meet Rinku (Sara Ali Khan), she is being chased by a group of men in jeeps, with ominous music in the background. The girl puts up a spirited defence, throws bottles and gaalis around, unabashedly and eventually succumbs to only the jabs of the resident matriarch, her nani (played by a fierce Seema Biswas). Rinku is being accused of trying to run away with her lover. Observing Rinku fending off the attackers at the railway station is a medical student Vishu (Dhanush), who then is hurriedly whisked away by his friends. The setting is Siwan in Bihar. Soon, Vishu and Rinku’s paths will cross in the most unexpected of ways and for all his efforts to keep out of harm's way the two are forcibly tied into holy matrimony.

Now what? Now yours truly will try to critique the specious plot without revealing any spoilers. Vishu and Rinku are very different people, as their train conversation will reveal. It’s the first time they actually talk to each other. While he is at his wits end about how to salvage the situation, she seems comfortable taking charge. Rinku has a warped notion of how epic love stories should be and speaks of her lover with a twinkle in her eyes. He, on the other hand, seems more practical, fears his degree will be in jeopardy if he ditches the Dean’s daughter. The whole party- Rinku, Vishu and friend Madhu (played by a solid Ashish Verma) arrive in Madurai.

That’s where A.R Rahman’s 'Chaka Chak' plays out in slightly perplexing conditions.

Atrangi Re has premiered on Disney+Hotstar.

Sara Ali Khan in Atrangi Re .

Rinku deserves our sympathy. As details bleed out, however inconsistently, they paint a picture of a pitiable character at the receiving end of an unloving family. She seems to be struggling with some demons of her past. Rinku has a deep-rooted trauma, which scars her present day realities. It's disconcerting how unsympathetically the film treats the predicament of its own heroine. For easy laughs nothing seems off limits- not emotional wounds, or mental illness.

The bewilderingly logic-free story falters many times before it reaches its denouement. Most of these are to do with the laughable knowledge of psychology and mental illnesses. It's infuriating because the hero and his friend are doctors.

The vertex of this love triangle is a jaadugar Sajjad Ali Khan. Akshay Kumar saunters in and plays it in a way like he doesn’t really care. The emotional depths Atrangi Re could have reached had it not been so eager to garner easy laughs or consider the audience inept in handling complex emotions comes in nearing the end. It’s a flashback sequence, without dialogues and throbbing with Rahman’s composition that puts in context Rinku’s pain and shows us what love can conquer. It’s heartbreaking and arresting, but the film goes back to spoon-feed us with scenes and dialogues bordering on unintentional comedy that belies its true meaning.

Akshay Kumar in Atrangi Re .

Sara’s sincerity is admirable and Dhanush gives it his all despite being given a half-baked character, but Atrangi Re is made up of several facepalm moments that prove to be its undoing.

Atrangi Re Movie Review

Atrangi Re

Atrangi Re Devesh Sharma , Dec 24, 2021, 12:50 IST

Sara Ali Khan, Akshay Kumar, Dhanush, Seema Biswas
Aanand L Rai
Romance, Comedy

Rinku Sooryavanshi ( Sara Ali Khan ) has a penchant for running away from her home in Siwan, Bihar. Vishu ( Dhanush ), is a Tamilian who is pursuing his doctorate in medicine in Delhi. He gets kidnapped by her relatives when he comes to Bihar on a medical camp and both are drugged and married thereafter. The snag is that Vishu is all set to be married to Mandy (Dimple Hayathi) soon. And Rinku is in love with a magician called Sajjad Ali Khan ( Akshay Kumar ). They come to an understanding that she’ll accompany Vishu to his engagement in Tamil Nadu, and they’ll part ways when Sajjad comes back from Africa. But due to circumstances, things don’t go well as planned. Mandy breaks off the engagement after learning of the truth, Vishu develops feelings for Rinku, who in turn finds herself to be in love with both Vishu and Sajjad. How the dilemma gets sorted forms the crux of the story…

While the casting of Akshay Kumar, Sara Ali Khan and Dhanush was celebrated as a coup by some, others questioned it saying there’s too much age difference between Sara and Akshay. After watching the film his casting looks spot on. Because it’s the glue of chemistry between Dhanush and Sara, between Akshay and Sara and between all three actors that holds the film firmly together. Aanand L Rai has a yen for telling complex love stories. His Tanu Weds Manu: Returns for instance, tackled the delicate issue of a man falling for a lookalike of his wife while still married, Raanjhanaa dealt with a man’s obsession with a girl he’s been in love with since his childhood and here, he weaves out a story around a girl dealing with emotional trauma and how love helps her deal with it.

There are no quick fixes in the film. The couple doesn’t immediately get attracted to each other after getting forcefully married. The emotional tug they feel about each other develops over time. The film weaves together a set of episodes, which combine to bring them closer. How Rinku and Vishu deal with the elephant in the room, or the man on top of the elephant – Sajjad Ali, is handled creatively as well. There’s much drama but everything is brushed with a comic touch. You laugh at the tragi-comic sequences and wait eagerly for the next twist in the plot.  The film is rather Chaplinesque in its proceedings, which take place at their own pace. But you don’t feel bored even once despite that. It helps that composer AR Rahman is in fine fettle here. Romantic films need good music and tracks like Chaka chak and Little little are earworms indeed. And the poetic Rait zara si provides the icing on the cake. Kudos to Irshad Kamil as well for writing evocative lyrics. Rai knows how to picturise a song well and all are imaginatively put together.

The implausible storyline would have fallen flat in the hands of lesser actors. But like we said earlier, Rai knew what he was doing when he chose this particular cast. Akshay Kumar has never done this sort of a role before. He gets to explore his sensitive side while still playing his strong suit – that of an over-the-top heroic character. The role suits him to a T and one can see that he has enjoyed playing this unusual character. Sara Ali Khan’s stars had dwindled after the debacle of Love Aaj Kal but here, she has once again shown why she's much admired for her natural ease in front of the camera. Rai’s direction has boosted her confidence. She comes up trumps on all counts – whether as a feisty girl who wants to run away with her lover, as the bride having mixed feelings about her marriage or as the woman finally owning up to the realities of life. Dhanush has teamed up with Rai after eight years, who has again extracted a well-rounded performance from him. The South superstar has the ability to underplay his characters and knows how to use his silence and his body language and has done so here effectively. You want to know more about Vishu and wonder why he doesn’t have a backstory. You want to applaud Vishu’s resilience while dealing with the difficult situation he’s been in. His pain, as well as his love are achingly real.

All-in-all, Atrangi Re is an unusual love story buoyed by some fine performances by Akshay Kumar, Sara Ali Khan and Dhanush and hummable music by AR Rahman. Aanand L Rai has found his rhythm again with this entertaining film which also packs a message. The director should have taken a gamble on this feel-good film and given it a theatrical release, rather than just going for an OTT release.

Atrangi Re: Dhanush Steals the Show with his Exceptional Performance

movie review of atrangi re

Aanand L. Rai’s Atrangi Re is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language musical love drama film. The film stars Sara Ali Khan, Dhanush, and Akshay Kumar and is produced by T-Series, Colour Yellow Productions, and Cape of Good Films. A R Rahman wrote the music. The film will be released in Hindi and Tamil at Disney+ Hotstar on December 24, 2021.

Cast of Atrangi Re

akshay kumar, dhanush, sara ali khan, atrangi re, atrangi re cast, atrangi re

  • Akshay Kumar in the role of Sajjad Ali Khan
  • S. Venkatesh is played by Dhanush, “Vishu” Vishwanath Iyer
  • Rinku Sooryavanshi is played by Sara Ali Khan.
  • Dimple Hayathi as Mandakini “Mandy” Ashish Verma as Madhusudhan “MS”
  • Rinku’s Nani is played by Seema Biswas.

Story: At the request of her Naani, Rinku Sooryavanshi (Sara Ali Khan) marries V Venkatesh Vishwanath Iyer aka Vishu (Dhanush), a senior medical student from Tamil Nadu (Seema Biswas). She is, nevertheless, deeply in love, if not obsessed, with magician Sajjad Ali Khan (Akshay Kumar). This strange triangle’s narrative develops gradually, taking surprising turns along the way.

Review of Atrangi Re

akshay kumar, dhanush, sara ali khan, atrangi re, atrangi re cast, atrangi re

Atrangi Re gets off to a fast start, with Rinku on the run and being pursued by a few men. But she’s no damsel in distress; she’s a feisty, assertive, and strong-willed young lady who doesn’t give up lightly.

While Rinku’s tyrannical grandmother and uncles demand the name of the man she’s been preparing to elope with for years, she refuses to divulge it just yet. Enraged by her arrogance, the naani directs her uncles to pick up (read ‘abduct’) any unknown boy from outside their village and marry Rinku off to him as soon as possible, so that she will no longer be a burden to the family.

Vishu is about to be engaged to Mandakini (Dimple Hayathi), the daughter of his college dean. But, as it turns out, he is forcibly married to Rinku instead. Sara and Dhanush have an intriguing connection that, although not all out there, keeps the screen alive.

Aanand L Rai and his writer Himanshu Sharma (plot, screenplay, and dialogues) have once again created a fresh narrative centred on characters who are diametrically opposed and unlikely to meet in real life or under normal circumstances. Rai deviates from the expected and creates a unique, hitherto unattempted and unexplored tension in a love narrative. Simultaneously, he masterfully brings to life the flavours of the locales where the narrative takes place, while also giving each one a special appeal.

akshay kumar, dhanush, sara ali khan, atrangi re, atrangi re cast, atrangi re

The first half is a breeze, and while there’s a hint of what’s coming in the second half through Vishnu’s companion Madhsudhan (Ashish Verma), a lot is lost in translation. As a result, the narrative becomes repetitious and a little dull in the second half, leaving you wondering where it’s all going.

The topic at hand is unique and intricate, and it is not possible to interpret cinematically without difficulties, which is where the storytelling falls short. The good news is that in most cases, the attempt has been made to maintain the thread of comedy intact. Atrangi Re also discusses the problem of mental health without delving too far into it.

Himanshu’s writing might have been better, more concise, and more effective. Thankfully, the songs aren’t startling or disrupting the narrative, and they move the plot along. And, like with most of his stories, Rai makes up for it with an unexpected twist at the end that moves you.

akshay kumar, dhanush, sara ali khan, atrangi re, atrangi re cast, atrangi re

Dhanush gives a diverse performance, expertly conveying the various emotions his character Vishu experiences throughout the film. Whether he’s showing astonishment and rage at being kidnapped, confessing his love for Rinku, or displaying helplessness when he fears he’ll lose her to another guy, the actor is in top form throughout.

Sara Ali Khan throws her heart and her into her character as Rinku, and she delivers her portrayal with sass and passion. Restraint would have improved her performance at key times in Atrangi Re, particularly during emotional passages.

Akshay Kumar has a tiny role as the magician Sajjad, yet his character is important to the plot. He appears in one of the film’s most memorable moments, in which he does a daring performance as a genuine “man on fire.” Ashish Verma, who plays Vishnu’s buddy Madhusudhan, provides excellent support and a steady dose of humour.

The production design by Nitin Zihani Choudhary offers Atrangi Re a rich and vivid appearance, which begins in Sivan, Bihar and continues to Delhi and Chennai during the plot. Pankaj Kumar, the film’s cinematographer, has done an excellent job of portraying the individual personalities of the numerous cities, which adds to the overall appearance of the film.

akshay kumar, dhanush, sara ali khan, atrangi re, atrangi re cast, atrangi re

AR Rahman reaffirms his status as an unrivalled composer in today’s entertainment industry. While his background score adds to the tension, his folk-classical soundtrack hits a note and has you tapping your toes. Irshad Kamil gets credit for his diverse lyrics, which span from cheerful melodies like Chaka Chak, Tera Rang, and Little Little to soulful Tumhe Mohabbat Hai and Rait Zara Si and the energetic Garda, making it a fantastic album that can be listened to all day.

While there are sections of Atrangi re that will leave you perplexed and wanting more information, this is not to suggest that the film isn’t entertaining. Here’s a one-of-a-kind plot, an intriguing cast, a new soundtrack, and some outstanding performances. If you’re looking for a hatke musical love story, this may be the week’s selection.

The film opens with Rinku (Sara Ali Khan) on the run, being chased by a few men. But wait, this 'toofan se kudi' isn't a damsel in distress. She is bold, strong-headed and doesn't mince her words.

After a 'glass breaking' spree on a railway station and an addition in the number of her failed attempts to elope with her lover Sajid Ali Khan (Akshay Kumar), Rinku's grandmother (Seema Biswas) decides to get her hitched by hook or by crook. Thus Rinku is forcibly married off to Vishu (Dhanush), a senior medical student from Tamil Nadu who is about to get engaged to his dean's daughter Mandy.

Post marriage, Vishu returns back to his college hostel with his new bride Rinku in New Delhi. A series of incidents make him slowly develop feelings for her. However his love story takes an 'atrangi' twist when it's hit by an unexpected conflict.

Direction

After the disastrous Zero in 2018, Aanand L Rai makes up for the colossal disappointment with his latest release Atrangi Re which stands true to its name in terms of the plot and its execution. Along with writer Himanshu Sharma, he weaves a hatke story which is high on emotions and has its heart at the right place.

Through his three protagonists, the filmmaker taps into emotions which are left behind and the feeling of self-delusion. Without sounding preachy, he also touches upon the topic of mental health in an interesting manner. The screenplay is sprinkled with generous dose of humour which keeps you largely entertained.

On the flip side, the narrative gets a bit tedious post intermission as the writing loses its sheen at a few places. However, Rai makes sure to leave you moist-eyed with an emotional finale.

Performances

Performances

Be it as a reluctant groom or lovelorn guy, Dhanush nails every shade of his character and makes you root for him. From R aanjhanaa to Atrangi Re , the National awardee has come a long way in Bollywood. In his latest Hindi release, he makes you fall in love with him in 'little little' ways in each and every frame.

Next comes Sara Ali Khan who surprises you with her range as an actress. She is confident and a perfect foil to Dhanush's calm act. The youngster is a firecracker on the dance floor and when it comes to the emotional portions, Khan delivers them with sincerity and vulnerability.

Akshay Kumar waves his magical wand and pulls out a heart-tugging performance which adds a new dimension to Dhanush-Sara's unconventional love story. The rest of the cast which includes Seema Biswas and Ashish Verma play their roles well in the plot.

Technical Aspects

Technical Aspects

Pankaj Kumar's camera work captures both Rinku and Vishu's world in a captivating way. He brings the uniqueness of Bihar, Madurai and Delhi to life through his frames and makes sure that they add a texture to the film. Hemal Kothari's editing is crisp.

Music

One of the biggest strengths of Atrangi Re is AR Rahman's music and Irshad Kamil's lyrics which fit like a glove to the film's narrative. What makes the soundtrack unique is that each song is an expression of what a particular character is going through at that moment. However if we had to pick up our favourites then it would be Arijit Singh's 'Tumhein Mohabbat Hai' and 'Rait Zara Si' in the vocals of Arijit Singh and Sashaa Tirupathi.

Verdict

' Dil thoda jazbaati hai, bhar jata hai baaton se, ye fir chhalke yun aankho se, ho jaise rait zara si.' Irshad Kamil's deep lyrics perfectly sums up your feelings after watching Aanand L Rai's Atrangi Re. The filmmaker wins us over with his unconventional tale which talks about how 'love triumphs over all odds'.

We give 3.5 stars out of 5 for Dhanush-Sara Ali Khan-Akshay Kumar's Atrangi Re.

ATRANGI RE MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Atrangi Re is a film written by Himanshu Sharma and directed by Aanand L Rai. The film is bankrolled by Aanand L Rai, Himanshu Sharma, Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar under the banners T - Series, Cape of Good Films, and Colour Yellow Productions. The film has Akshay Kumar, Sara Ali Khan and Dhanush in the lead roles.

Dhanush plays the role of Vishu, a doctor who is on a trip to Bihar. On the other hand, there is Rinku (Sara Ali Khan) who elopes from her house for the nth time only to be caught by her family. They decide to marry her off to some random stranger. So they kidnap Vishu and forcefully marry them off. On the train journey to Delhi, both of them reveal about their respective lovers - Vishu is supposed to get engaged to his girlfriend in Chennai, and Rinku is deeply in love with Sajjad Ali Khan (Akshay Kumar), a magician. What happens next and how they resolve this problem forms the film.

There is a popular dialogue of Vadivelu which says, "Puyal vegathula poyitu iruken, kurukka edhuvum vandhura koodadhu", meaning I'm going at reckless speed, I hope no hurdle comes in front. This seems to be the mood in which the film was made, because both the director and writer have created a film where the scenes are either magical or look extremely weird and illogical.

In the former, the film aims to be a fantasy drama and is fairly successful. For instance, there's the introduction of Rinku, where she is being chased by goons in cars. She ends up in a railway station and starts attacking them with soda bottles. She gets caught in the end, but doesn't give up. This stretch looks refreshing. But there's the other end of the spectrum. Vishu (Dhanush) has a girlfriend to whom he's getting engaged in a couple of days. Yet, when he is travelling with Rinku on the train, he develops feelings for her immediately, without a thought about his girlfriend. It's sequences like this where the film falters.

Another issue with the film is it's casting of the leads, except Dhanush who is terrific and shoulders the film throughout. His antics and Tamil dialogues are a delight to watch. Sara Ali Khan's Bihari accent is inconsistent and needs more work. In a few scenes, she gets it right, but in others, it's a bit off.

Akshay Kumar as Sara Ali Khan's love interest might have been an interesting idea on paper, but there's a clear lack of chemistry between them. More effort could have been put in on the make up department to make him more younger which could have made their romance believable.

It would be a crime to dismiss this film entirely because of the work of music director AR Rahman and cinematographer Pankaj Kumar. Rahman uses his experience and gives us a stellar score combined with a soundtrack to remember. Especially Chaka Chak and Rait Zara Si are earworms. Pankaj Kumar's visuals have the same quality that we saw in Tummbad and this is a memorable outing for him.

Aanand L Rai is a director who has given us a lot of progressive films in the past like Tanu Weds Manu. However, here that seems to be lacking. The film takes on a lot of issues but doesn't delve into any of them deeply. Apart from Dhanush and the technical quality, the film performs low on the other departments. But the positive elements are so good that it makes the film watchable.

Atrangi Re Movie Review: ATRANGI RE addresses a pertinent topic, that is, mental health.

Despite an unconevtional plot atrangi re addresses a pertinent topic, that is, mental health, atrangi re review {3.0/5} & review rating.

ATRANGI RE is the story of a girl in love with two men. Rinku Suryavanshi ( Sara Ali Khan ) resides in Siwan, Bihar with her extended family. The extended family killed Rinku's parents when she was a child. Rinku is in love with a mysterious man named Sajjad ( Akshay Kumar ) and has eloped with him multiple times. After her latest failed elopement, her maternal grandmother (Seema Biswas) gets fed up with her. She tells her family to get her married with any man available, preferably someone from outside Bihar. Her family members spot Vishu (Dhanush) in their town. He's a medical student who has come to Siwan for a camp. His marriage is already fixed with his girlfriend Mandakini aka Mandy (Dimple Hayati) and their engagement is just a few days away. Rinku's family abducts him and forces him to get married to Rinku. The next day, they book a ticket for them on a train to Delhi. On the train, Vishu is in a daze over last night's development. Rinku tells Vishu that she is in love with Sajjad and that she'll depart with him once she reaches Delhi. Vishu is relieved to know that even for her, it's a forced marriage. He reaches Delhi, where he studies. Rinku tells him that Sajjad has gone to Africa to study magic and that he'll return in 10 days. Vishu has to leave for Madurai. So, he tells Rinku to stay put at his hostel till Sajjad returns. Or else, she can join him for his engagement in Madurai. Rinku accompanies him to Madurai where Vishu and Mandy get engaged. All is going well until Mandy chances upon the video of Vishu and Rinku's wedding. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Atrangi Re

Himanshu Sharma's story is innovative and unconventional. The screenplay, however, turns this flawed plot line into a watchable fare. The writer has added some very touching and impressive sequences. Hence, one doesn't mind even if the goings on get too 'atrangi' . Himanshu Sharma's dialogues, as expected, are one of the highpoints as they are very witty and suit the character’s traits.

Aanand L Rai's direction is great. His storytelling has evolved and it's evident in several scenes. His biggest victory is that he manages to hold the attention of the audience and give a convincing execution to a plot like this. Any other director could have fallen flat but Aanand comes out with flying colours. He also makes an important comment on mental health. The second hand could have been sharper and a little more sensible though.

ATRANGI RE starts off very well. A few scenes in the first half are exceptional like Rinku and Vishu’s forced marriage, their conversation in the train etc. The sequence where Vishu rattles off a monologue in Tamil in front of an emotional Rinku is beautiful. The scene minutes before the intermission point is a shocker. Post-interval, the film continues to be interesting although some developments are difficult to digest. The way Rinku resides peacefully in an all-boys hostel and nobody minds is difficult to comprehend. However, even more unconvincing is how in the second half, all the hostel mates come together to participate in the madness for the sake of Vishu and Rinku’s love story. The ending has another twist and while the conservative audience would reject such a culmination, the ones looking for something ‘hatke’ would lap it up.

ATRANGI RE is embellished with some fine performances. Sara Ali Khan had played another ‘atrangi’ character in LOVE AAJ KAL [2020] but it fell flat. However, here, she is in superb form and proves that she is one of the most promising actors today. This was no easy character and as the film progresses, one realizes the character is so layered and complex. However, Sara plays it effortlessly. Dhanush, as expected, gives a rocking performance. He has given several memorable performances over the years and yet, one is blown away with his act in this film. He’s of course impressive during the emotional monologue, his dance in the loo or when he loses it in the train and auto rickshaw. But there are scenes where he has no dialogues and it’s impressive how he communicates with his silences and eyes. Akshay Kumar is lovely in the supporting part. He adds a lot of starry appeal. Ashish Verma (Madhusudhan) is dependable as the sidekick.  Seema Biswas and Dimple Hayathi are okay in their small roles. Pankaj Jha (Rinku's mama) and Gopal Dutt (Divorce lawyer) are hardly there and are wasted. One expected more from them. Mannat Mishra (Baby Rinku) is cute.

How Sara Ali Khan doesn’t get intimidated by senior actors? She reveals | Atrangi Re

A R Rahman's music is soulful and one of the USPs of the film. 'Rait Zara Si' is like a theme of the film. 'Chaka Chak' is foot-tapping and the best of the lot. 'Tere Rang' and 'Toofan Si Kudi' spring a surprise and are well shot. 'Tumhein Mohabbat Hai', 'Garda' and 'Little Little' are not as impressive. A R Rahman's background score is brilliant and it gives a nice touch to several scenes.

Pankaj Kumar's cinematography is very good. One doesn’t expect out-of-the-box camerawork in a film of this genre but the lensman surprises. Nitin Zihani Choudhary's production design is very appealing. Ankita Jha's costumes are realistic. Manish Malhotra's costumes for Sara Ali Khan can be trendsetting. Sham Kaushal's action is passable. RedChillies.VFX's VFX is rich. Hemal Kothari's editing could have been tighter.

On the whole, ATRANGI RE rests on a very unconventional plot. But it addresses a pertinent topic, that is, mental health which is tackled with sensitivity. Also, the performances, the musical score and several well-executed scenes turn the film into a watchable fare.

‘Atrangi Re’ movie review: Even Dhanush can’t save this weird take on love

In a bid to move beyond the obvious, director aanand l rai has bloated a beautiful little thought into a contrived mess, along with a disturbing depiction of mental illness.

A still from ‘Atrangi Re’

“I can’t breathe; everything else is alright,” declares Rinku Suryavanshi (Sara Ali Khan), a spirited runaway girl from Siwan town in Bihar, who loves to make a dash — for and from love — as she cranes her head out of a moving autorickshaw in the polluted air of Delhi. This is exactly the problem with director Aanand L Rai’s latest leap of faith. It has an unusual premise, grand scale, big-ticket performers and the moving melodies of A.R Rahman, but the contrived love story still gasps for breath.

Like Vishwanathan Iyer or simply Vishu (Dhanush), a Tamil medical student from a Delhi college, who is forcibly married to Rinku — under the influence of laughing gas — there is a lot of hot air around a seemingly-complex idea revolving around two men and a woman.

Rinku tells Vishu her heart beats for Sajjad Ali Khan (Akshay Kumar), a magician whom nobody has seen. Vishu is committed to another girl. Both think it would just be a matter of days before they go their respective ways, but as we know, in the universe of Rai and writer Himanshu Sharma, the boy and girl tend to meet under strange circumstances before cupid strikes. But here as the title suggests, things get increasingly weird and outlandish. So much so that by the time it lands on its feet, one has lost patience.

The spectacular premise is rooted in mental illness, but seeks to probe the layers of the heart. It talks of the confusion girls have in choosing between a lover and a husband. It hints at how some girls look for a reflection of their father in their partner. It talks of human vulnerabilities and selfless love. It talks of letting go of the past and embracing the present. A metaphor works in many ways; Rinku could well be the Sita of yesterday or a reflection on the India of today.

However, for all these meanings to unravel, the story on the surface has to work. Here, Sharma and Rai, falter once again. Like Zero — their last outing at the turnstiles — in a bid to move beyond the obvious, they have again bloated a beautiful little thought into a contrived mess.

With no clear intrinsic logic in sight, the stereotypes that the script upholds about Bihar and South Indians for a few laughs become all the more glaring. Similarly, its depiction of mental illness is disturbing to say the least. We understand love still has many obstacles in the hinterland, but it is hard to imagine that a powerful family doesn’t try to know the identity of the guy their daughter is desperate to elope with. We know mental illness is still hard to comprehend, but here it has been used just for convenience to further a contrived plot. It seems the protagonist’s friend has been told that he is a sidekick first and a psychiatrist later!

Sara Ali Khan wholeheartedly dives into the role of the perky protagonist, but falters as the material gets dense and is expected to be more than just Chaka Chak, her introductory number. As the elephant-riding magician, Akshay Kumar comes across as a single-trick pony for no fault of his. He has just chosen a wrong vehicle to experiment with his image.

As the medical student who becomes the cure, Vishu is a derivative of the character Dhanush played in Raanjhanaa. His simple, unalloyed charm is once against hard to resist, and it’s his unlikely covalence with Sara that lends meaning to songs like Jaise Ret Zara Si. He instills a semblance of life into the love story and is the reason that keeps you interested even when Rai’s big reveal makes you increasingly frustrated. But even he can’t salvage this weird take on love.

Atrangi Re summary and ending explained

Atrangi Re

Atrangi Re is a rom-com that tells the story of Rinku and Vishu as they’re brought together under unforeseen circumstances and how this situation leads to the development of a close bond between them. The film is now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.

Rinku (Sara Ali Khan) belongs to a traditional family in rural Bihar where she constantly tries to elope with her lover. Each time they catch her and beat her up but she never reveals the identity of this lover. Rinku’s grandmother (Seema Biswas) decides that they need to get her married so that the problem is shifted to someone else.

Vishu (Dhanush) is a medical student who has arrived in Bihar from Delhi with his friend, Madhusudhan ‘MS’ (Ashish Verma) to set up a medical camp in the rural area. Vishu is also set to be engaged to Mandy (DImple Hayathi), the daughter of the dean of the University, in Chennai in a couple of days.

Rinku’s uncles spot Vishu and MS during their rounds and decide to pick up MS. Unfortunately, they pick up Vishu instead and go ahead with it. With the help of some laughing gas and suppressants, they can conduct the marriage and then put them on a train back to Delhi.

Rinku and Vishu both agree that they’re not accepting of this union since Vishu has Mandy waiting for him and Rinku has her lover. She goes on to tell him the story of Sajjad Ali Khan (Akshay Kumar), the man she fell in love with and has constantly tried to run away with.

Sajjad is a magician meant to be in Africa to hone his craft and Rinku assures Vishu that he’ll be back in Delhi soon to take her with him. In the meantime, Vishu and his friends have to go to Chennai for the engagement and they call Rinku along.

At the engagement, Vishu hides the fact that he was forcefully married from Mandy on advice from MS. Rinku teases him throughout the function as well. Eventually one of Mandy’s relatives shows her a video of Vishu’s engagement and the whole occasion breaks down.

Vishu is apologetic but when Mandy’s father disrespects Rinku and lays a hand on her, Vishu goes into a rage and leaves along with her and the rest of his family.

When they arrive back in Delhi, Vishu bares his heart out to Rinku saying that in the last couple of days he has fallen for her and that subdues the hurt from his broken engagement. As soon as he says this, Rinku hears the trumpet of an elephant and realizes that Sajjad is here.

Vishu feels defeated by this news and buries himself in his work. He asks MS to go say goodbye to Rinku and Sajjad, but when MS goes to meet them he realises that Sajjad doesn’t exist. He’s a figment of Rinku’s imagination.

He rushes back to tell Vishu and the two of them theorize on what must have led to this delusion. They conclude that the love story she narrates earlier is of her parents, and when they were murdered in front of her eyes she manifested the image of her father, Sajjad, as a way to deal with the trauma.

He shows up anytime she finds herself becoming vulnerable towards someone so that he can build a wall around and protect her. MS tells Vishu that to cure her of this delusion, Rinku needs to realise on her own that she doesn’t exist and all they can do is give her appropriate medication while Vishu tries to charm her in his favour.

The medication does help slightly but Vishu gets impatient about her recovery. One night when he gets drunk, he visits Rinku’s room to tell her the truth about Sajjad. Rinku tells him that Sajjad is down with a fever and Vishu agrees to take a look at him.

Vishu decides not to tell her the truth and the two of them share a moment where she kisses him on the cheek. Sajjad sees this and gets jealous, threatening to hurt himself. He claims that Vishu needs to prove himself first before he can ask for Rinku’s affection in return.

Vishu gets annoyed and says that Sajjad needs to similarly prove himself, before smashing beer bottles on his head. He says that if Sajjad cared about her he would stop Vishu but he isn’t able to. Vishu spends the night in the hospital bed and the next morning Rinku and Sajjad visit him to apologise.

If you have any more questions about the ending, below is a brief run-through of it.

Atrangi Re ending explained in detail:

A magicians greatest trick.

Sajjad offers to show Vishu one of his greatest magic tricks as an apology for not stopping him the previous night. He states that he can make the Taj Mahal momentarily disappear. Vishu agrees to this gift and they all head to Agra the next day.

Vishu and his friends gather the public nearby with the lure of money to quietly clap whenever Rinku does and play along with her. Just as Sajjad is about to pull off the trick, MS gives Rinku her medication and at that very moment, Sajjad’s trick fails. The crowd unknowingly claps and that’s when doubt creeps into Rinku’s head.

When they head back, Rinku chastises Sajjad for his failure and goes to Vishu for comfort. It is at this very point that Sajjad calls to her and slits his wrists in front of her. She cries out in pain and Vishu and the other play along by pretending to operate on Sajjad.

While MS says that they should just tell her that he died, Vishu finds himself unable to do that and tells her that they were able to save him. The next day, Vishu tells Rinku that once they sign the divorce papers, she needs to leave with Sajjad.

The planets are not alligned

Vishu and Rinku head to the court where the lawyer has set up an appointment for them to sign their divorce papers. Rinku is not ready to sign them and keeps coming up with excuses. Finally, she decides to run away from the court to avoid signing.

She gets into an auto and asks him to head back to their hostel but Vishu manages to get in as well. She begs him not to force her to sign because she likes being his wife. After all, he cares about her. She also does not want to let go of Sajjad which is what Vishu cannot agree with.

He gives her an ultimatum to choose him or Sajjad. When she cannot choose, he tells her to go back and get ready because he will get her married that day no matter what.

Letting go of the past

When she reaches back she asks Sajjad to talk some sense into Vishu but Sajjad disappears right then. Vishu arrives with a whole band and baaraat and dances with them. Rinku asks him to stop and tells him that Sajjad has left for Japan and won’t be coming back.

Vishu and MS tell her that they can follow him to Japan to get this wedding done. They head over to the railway station and Vishu tells her that they will wait for her outside for a few hours. She can leave with Sajjad or come back and take her place beside her husband.

She heads inside and sees Sajjad with a small girl. He talks to her about her mother and how brave she was. He also tells her that the small girl is Rinku’s younger self.

Sajjad says that the time to let go has finally arrived because she has found someone who loves her just as much and will protect her. He says goodbye to her one last time and reminds her that he will never show up again.

Rinku lets out buckets of tears before heading back where Vishu is waiting for her. The two of them embrace, ready to spend the rest of their lives together with each other.

Atrangi Re movie review: Dear Dhanush and Sara Ali Khan, Why?

There is a difference between complexity and contrivances. Atrangi Re confuses the two and piles twist upon twist to sustain its bizarre plotline.

Atrangi Re movie review: Dear Dhanush and Sara Ali Khan, Why?

Language: Hindi with Tamil and English

Aanand L. Rai has built his career on capturing the flavours of small-town India in blockbusters such as Tanu Weds Manu , Raanjhanaa and Tanu Weds Manu Returns that he directed. Although the gender politics in these three films offer a curious contrast to the progressiveness of Nil Battey Sannata and Tumbbad that he produced but did not direct, one thing is for sure: weird is not a word that could be used for his directorial ventures so far.

Atrangi Re , directed by Rai and written by his long-time collaborator Himanshu Sharma, is – I can’t think of another way of saying this – weird. It is the oddest Hindi film release of 2021.

On a trip to Siwan in Bihar, Vishwanathan Iyer a.k.a. Vishu (Dhanush) – a Tamilian and a medico – is abducted and forced to marry Rinku Sooryavanshi (Sara Ali Khan) whose grandmother (Seema Biswas) wants the troublesome girl off her hands. Once out of the clutches of her violent family, Rinku tells Vishu about her long-time amour Sajjad Ali Khan (Akshay Kumar) who her people do not approve of. He in turn informs her that he is due to be engaged to his girlfriend in Chennai with both parents’ blessings in just a few days.

Those familiar with Bihar society would be aware of groom abductions and pakdau / jabariya shaadi . These primitive practices were the subject of the 2019 Hindi film Jabariya Jodi . They are the take-off point but not the theme of Atrangi Re.

If you have been tracking Messrs Rai and Sharma’s respective filmographies, you will know that they are committed to the idea of love at first sight – not infatuation or attraction but a deep, abiding love that is born without getting to know a person at all. So it comes as no surprise that Vishu has fallen for Rinku despite the soon-to-be-fiancee waiting in the wings. The datedness or immaturity of this notion is far from being the worst part of Atrangi Re .

What follows is truly strange, an incomprehensible mish-mash of enduring love, the impact of trauma on the human psyche and social objections to inter-community romances.

Bollywood’s continuing tendency to cast women as romantic partners of male actors old enough to be their fathers has been the subject of some discussion since Sara Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar’s names were announced for this project. For the record, there is more to Rinku and Sajjad than what a viewer might assume from the trailer and the description of the story so far. Nevertheless, the 28-year age difference between the two actors is glaring on screen and adds to the discomfiting, icky nature of the relationship drawn up between them in the script.

Without giving away any spoilers, let’s just say it appears not to have struck the entire team of Atrangi Re that, irrespective of how they spin it, their equation contains an element of incest. This, among other reasons, is why the second half of the film, which seems designed to be profound and moving, is none of that.

Dhanush is earnest as a man with feelings so intense for his ‘wife’ that he is willing to go to ludicrous lengths for her, but that earnestness is wasted on the ridiculousness of his character’s actions. Besides, as a senior star in the Tamil industry, one has to ask why he is willing to be typecast in Hindi cinema. The similarities between his characters in Raanjhanaa and Atrangi Re are pronounced.

Sara is just as involved in her performance as he is, but goes over the top too often.

Akshay’s Sajjad is a supporting character who enters the picture quite late in the proceedings. I can’t imagine any star managing to rise above such peculiar conceptualisation, so rather than trying to analyse his acting here it makes sense to ask: what on earth was he thinking while accepting this role?

And why, in the middle of this outlandish plot, does Sajjad take time out to take a potshot at Mughal emperor Shahjahan?

Neither the artistes nor A.R. Rahman’s hummable music for Atrangi Re can be critiqued with any degree of seriousness when you consider the starting block: the inexplicable writing and the script’s distorted understanding of psychiatry.

Dhanush and Akshay are veterans who might easily recover from an off day. The one who has a lot more to lose than they do from making such poor choices is Sara. The young actor was an enjoyable bundle of verve in Kedarnath , which marked her debut, but has been floundering ever since. Those who loved her turn as the impossible-to-be-fettered Mandakini Mishra in that film can only hope she finds better advisers right away.

Meanwhile, what she and Dhanush saw in Atrangi Re will remain a mystery that only they can solve for us.

‘Atrangi Re’ Summary & Review – Is Bollywood Still Mocking Mental Health?

Atrangi Re Summary Review 2021 Indian Film Aanand L Ra

It has been quite a while since we have seen a good love story come out of Bollywood. ‘Atrangi Re’ gives you hope that tinsel town still has it and can deliver, but hope is all it provides because this is not it. To the average viewer, the movie is certainly entertaining, and many instances will leave you smiling along with the occasional chuckle, and this is credit that must be given. But if your soul possesses even a tiny percentage of cynicism, you will be annoyed.

Let’s start by making one thing clear. The term ‘Atrangi Re’ translates to ‘colorful.’ For non-Hindi language speakers, it is used in a few contexts, depending on which it could also mean unusual and entertaining. But the director of the film, Anand L.Rai, decided to go with the meaning as ‘Funnily Weird,’ which he clearly intends for the tone of the film to be.

Plot Summary

The film is a love story, in fact, more of a love triangle between Rinku, Vishu, and Sajjad. Rinku, played by Sara Ali Khan, is a feisty 24-year-old woman from rural Bihar who has lived with her extended family since the death of her parents and has run away from home with her boyfriend multiple times since she was 14 years old. Her family has never been able to find out who this person is and are tired of her so-called ‘antics’ when they finally decide to get her married. Their only requirement is the man be someone outside of Bihar. They spot Vishu, played by Dhanush, a medical student who is in the area for a college trip. They kidnap him, make him breathe laughing gas, and get him married to a sedated Rinku. As a non-expert in Chemistry, the question is, why not sedate him as well? What was the purpose of the laughing gas other than the comedic effect?

After the wedding, as they are leaving the place, they start talking about each other, when Rinku tells him about Sajjad, her supposed boyfriend, who will come and take her away in a few days. Rinku and Vishu reach a mutual agreement to part ways once Sajjad returns. In the meantime, Vishu is getting engaged in two days and chooses not to tell his to-be fiancé about his forced marriage on the advice of his friend who claims to understand women.

Of course, things don’t go as planned, and secrets are revealed, feelings are confessed, old flames return, and discoveries are made, all in the span of 20 minutes. It’s ok; we won’t complain about that.

What Went Wrong With ‘Atrangi Re’?

We can’t help but wonder how Vishu fell in love with Rinku in a supposed span of two days when all we saw him do was look at her with extreme discomfort. Is ‘uncomfortable’ the new ‘look of love? Either way, this is for the first half of the movie.

The second half of the movie is proof of why Bollywood should stay away from mental health topics. Here we have Rinku, a girl with obviously deep-seated childhood trauma that has manifested very strongly into her adulthood and is a defining part of her current circumstances. And what does our protagonist Vishu, who happens to be a medical student, do about that? He decides to start treating her, and by that we mean, give her medication without her consent and hope she gets better. He is assisted by his friend, a fellow medical student studying psychiatry and who thinks he understands women.

Let’s be clear that there is not a single certified therapist or psychiatrist in this situation. They are all still medical students. And the whole ‘treatment without consent is not only illegal but also very morally wrong. The writers of the movie and the director have treated her trauma as they would treat the common cold, which is extremely worrying considering the soft power Bollywood has in this country, along with the current attitude and misinformation people have towards the subject of mental health. The whole team should have done better.

‘Atrangi Re’ Ending Review

Once we get past the unforgivably problematic aspect of the movie, we encounter the reason why Bollywood has fallen into a dearth of good rom coms. The answer is simple- it’s because the characters are very one-dimensional, and we don’t see why they have fallen in love other than that they were supposed to. Rinku is your garden-variety manic pixie dream girl, and Vishu is your typical Bollywood guy in love who would do anything for his lady love. We have to say here, Dhanush, who plays Vishu, is so incredibly charming, and despite our lack of conviction in the love story, he plays it so well that you find your heart actually breaking for him. We really wish his character was more than the ‘man in love’ as he had that potential. He is undoubtedly the star of the show.

Sara Ali Khan, as Rinku, does what she is supposed to do and does it well, but her character deserved better writing. Akshay Kumar, as Sajjad, does what he has done in every movie- he plays the desi and sassy larger-than-life guy who everyone loves. This movie has a major fault, and that is that it does not show how Rinku falls in love with Vishu? She was always caught up in the love triangle, but when did she see the love? She does confess at the end, but it comes across as something done for the sake of the story and not real.

The ending scene where Rinku realizes the truth of Sajjad and ‘gets over her trauma’ should have happened in a therapist’s office, not in a packed railway station. And the girl needed to get her life together after that, not just simply run into the arms of the ‘hero.’

Should You Watch ‘Atrangi Re’?

We are honestly torn about this recommendation. On the one hand, it was definitely entertaining. It’s not a love story for the ages, but it is also not a waste of time. And for anybody following the promotions of the movie or any of the actors for the matter, there is a moment of petty satisfaction when Vishu teasingly sings and dances to the hit song ‘Chaka Chak’ to Rinku. But on the other hand, there is the messed-up representation of mental health.

So, our advice would be, watch it with a filter. You will be listening to the aforementioned song on loop and maybe want to start binge-watching Dhanush’s other movies after that. It will, however, always be a thorn in our side that a film with such a fantastic director, such amazing music, and a definitely talented star cast fell short of being a ‘must-watch’ simply because of its insensitivity to mental health. If you can intelligently ignore that aspect of it, it is a good 2 hours and 20 minutes of your time spent smiling throughout, and if you can’t ignore it, just listen to the movie’s album on YouTube. That’s the best part either way.

On the whole, Atrangi Re is a film with very limited appeal because although it has a novel story, its script is not convincing. Except for a thin section, it will not find favour with the audience.

Ratings: — Review By: Anupama Chopra Site: Filmcompanion

Atrangi Re has the same DNA. Here, they concoct a love triangle which isnt what it seems.

Ratings: 2/5 Review By: Saibal Site: NDTV

Atrangi Re, scripted by Himanshu Sharma, demands an unconscionable degree of willing suspension of disbelief as is it lets go off all semblance of logic. The contrived storyline is intended to tug at our heartstrings – all it does is lurch from one difficult-to-digest situation to another to establish the depth of Rinku’s love for Sajjad and the strength of Vishu’s resolve in a ‘unique’ love triangle that for the most part goes round in baffling and tedious circles.

Ratings: 3/5 Review By: Tushar Site: India Today

Atrangi Re is a story of love, loss, grief, trauma and how a person navigates through all this and copes with what life has to offer. The film doesn’t present a linear or singular point of view but lets the audience decide what to make of the choices these characters make in the last 20 minutes of the film. Atrangi Re is Aanand L Rais bravest attempt in storytelling, even braver than Zero, given the subject it deals with. It is heartening to see a director show passion about breaking new ground and experimenting with format and style, yet stick to his core belief in filmmaking. Atrangi Re deserves a watch for attempting something new. It is risky but also a welcome step in the right direction. Dont hesitate to embrace the new.

Ratings: 1.5/5 Review By: Shubhra Site: Indian Express

Thank the good lord, whichever religion you believe in, for Dhanush. He was one of the nicer elements of Raanjhna, which came from the same team. Here, he rises above the clunkiness of his character, treading between a dutiful familial union and falling in love with a strange stranger, and treats us to an actor who works through his beats to get to where he needs to be going. This was meant to be a magical mystery tour, but ends up as a misfire.

Ratings: 3.5/5 Review By: Hiren Site: Times Of India

While there are parts of the movie that will leave you baffled and curious for more details, its not to say that the film doesnt entirely entertain. Heres a unique story at hand, an interesting team of actors, a refreshing soundtrack and some fine performances. If youre keen to watch a hatke musical love story, this could be your pick of the week.

Ratings: 3.5/5 Review By: Umesh Site: Koimoi

Its a twisted love triangle with its edge so sharp that it busts all the perceptions of €œWhat romance should be?€ & the urge of finding someone as hopeless as romantic as Dhanush All said and done, Atrangi Re is way way more than being your routine love triangle. A very welcoming change for Bollywood to learn how you can tell an age-old story in so many different ways.

Atrangi Re lives up to its title. Directed by Aanand L Rai, it’s refreshingly different, unique love story that so beautifully breaks through the clutter. It’s not remotely close to how we have visualised or seen romances on screen over the years. The film delves deep into relations we hold onto, emotions that are left behind, the denial we often live in and the acceptance that follows after a lot of pain

Why Are They Ruining ‘SpongeBob Squarepants’?!

ROTTEN PINEAPPLE

When people say the phrase nightmare fuel, this new Netflix movie is precisely the kind of thing they’re referring to.

Barry Levitt

Barry Levitt

Freelance Writer

SpongeBob SquarePants and Sandy Cheeks.

Everyone’s favorite Bikini Bottom resident is starring in a brand new film. No, not SpongeBob (though he’s still a main character). The focus, for the first time, is all on Sandy Cheeks, the squirrel scientist from Texas who came undersea to Bikini Bottom to do valuable research.

She’s the star of the newest SpongeBob SquarePants movie, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie , now streaming on Netflix . Things start great, with a strong Sandy-led musical number, but when the plot sets in gear and the gang goes above water, the wheels come off faster than you can sing the show’s theme song .

A promising part of spinoffs is getting to know underappreciated characters: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish , for example, gave audiences a deeper understanding of the tabby cat that allowed us to fall deeper in love with him. The Sandy Cheeks Movie offers that same thrilling prospect but woefully underdelivers on its promise.

Instead of getting to know Sandy, the film throws a bunch of new characters into the mix—Sandy’s entire family is introduced, who are all one-note and are stereotypical Southern archetypes instead of fleshed-out characters. The family dynamics should, in theory, tell us a lot more about who Sandy is, but the film never dives deeper than the fact that Sandy is a scientist and loves her friends—things you already can glean from a single episode of the TV show, or a quick google search.

Squidward, Patrick and Mr. Krabs.

Squidward, Patrick and Mr. Krabs

It’s especially frustrating that characters like Squidward, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs are reduced to the sidelines in favor of Sandy’s family. So much of the best humor in SpongeBob has come from these characters interacting with one another—Squidward getting annoyed and SpongeBob’s relentless optimism, for instance, is always hilarious. Separating SpongeBob from most of his usual friends could pay dividends, but Sandy’s family members are one note at best and annoying at worst, and are never given space to become anything worthwhile. That’s a shame because there’s plenty of potential there to create memorable family dynamics, but it’s an opportunity left frustratingly unrealized.

SpongeBob has always been gleefully absurd, and to its credit, The Sandy Cheeks Movie is certainly out there. But there’s a trepidation to the script, which never fully commits to the gonzo madness a movie like this requires.

That’s especially clear with villain Sue Nahmee (you know, like tsunami), played by Wanda Sykes. Sykes is completely committed to the bit as the mad scientist with a sinister plan, and brings the attitude that makes you feel like you’re about to see the next Felix Buchanan, the beloved Hugh Grant character in Paddington 2 . But the script doesn’t know what to do with Sue, who’s left to flounder with two deeply unfunny lab assistants. Her so-called evil plan, which the entire plot hinges on, doesn’t feel especially thought-out; everyone says it’s bad, but the script never probes beyond the surface and really unpacks why the diabolical scheme is especially diabolical.

An ever-reliable SpongeBob trademark is its vivid and colorful animation, and this is the first movie that does away with the traditional animated look of the franchise. Previous entry The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water played with the idea of CG-characters when the characters left Bikini Bottom for the surface, and the result was enjoyable, with the delightful color and textures remaining intact.

In The Sandy Cheeks Movie though, the result is borderline disastrous. Credit where it’s due—Sandy and her squirrel family look terrific, with intricately-textured fur. But the rest of the Bikini Bottom crew is overly-polished, and eerily smooth and textureless. It’s jarring, and oftentimes a unique animation style can take a few minutes to adjust to, but The Sandy Cheeks Movie never gels.

Ilia Isorelýs Paulino and Matty Cardarople

Ilia Isorelýs Paulino and Matty Cardarople

The merging between live-action and animated worlds clashes uncomfortably, and it all just feels off. Animation is the storytelling medium that allows for the most extreme range of facial emotions, but the plasticky nature of these character designs makes characters like Mr. Krabs look more like a vacant action figure rather than a money loving crab with feelings.

Even worse is what they do with Sykes’ Sue Nahmee. The character gets a flashback sequence to her youth, but retains her adult head, which is a fun gag for a brief moment, but becomes increasingly uneasy as it goes on. What’s stranger is that she looks like something out of Canadian youth television show Angela Anaconda . When people say the phrase nightmare fuel, this is precisely the kind of thing they’re referring to. This is to say nothing of a late third-act reveal that’s so silly and looks so preposterous it’s almost worth watching the film for. Almost.

The Sandy Cheeks Movie is a great idea. Sandy has always been a delightful if underappreciated part of Bikini Bottom, but the movie fails to give her the spotlight she rightfully deserves. Its initial promise is washed out by cheap jokes, an uninspired plot, and off-putting animation. Thankfully there are still plenty of terrific SpongeBob episodes—and other films—to enjoy, but The Sandy Cheeks Movie isn’t one of them.

6 New Movies Our Critics Are Talking About This Week

Whether you’re a casual moviegoer or an avid buff, our reviewers think these films are worth knowing about. (Though one missing movie, “Trap,” was not screened early for critics.)

Coloring inside the lines.

Three people, one in back and two in front, in a cockpit in a scene from “Harold and the Purple Crayon.”

‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’

Directed by Carlos Saldanha, this adaptation of the children's book of the same name follows Harold (Zachary Levi) with the magical purple crayon that brings his drawings to life as he encounters adulthood and the real world.

From our review:

There’s a standard-issue single mom (Zooey Deschanel, whose visible exhaustion here is actually a little too credible) and her boy, Mel (Benjamin Bottani), whose life is in need of wonder. This wonder will arrive through a tool of “pure imagination” (they really say that!). That is, Harold’s purple crayon, whose concoctions add some not-insubstantial visual interest to the proceedings. One scene in a department store, in which an actual puma and a too-functional kid’s helicopter ride contribute some anarchic slapstick, is a keeper. But it might have been better still as contrived by Terry Gilliam. Or Edgar Wright. Or Spike Jonze.

In a pandemic, don’t kiss the chef.

During the 1918 influenza outbreak, a family led by the liberal journalist Jay (Billy Magnussen), hires a new chef Floyd Monk (Peter Sarsgaard), who disrupts the peace of their remote island estate in this satire from Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman.

As Monk lifts the veil enshrouding the estate’s hierarchy, he also emasculates Jay in the eyes of the household. This implication that virility trumps effeteness is, amid an otherwise straightforward comedy, an uncomfortably regressive way to tell the story of how people vie for power in hard times.

A gut punch from a refreshing angle.

‘rob peace’.

In this coming-of-age drama directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rob Peace (Jay Will) is torn between his studies at Yale and the legal troubles of his father (played by Ejiofor).

The cinematographer Ksenia Sereda adheres to a blend of low angle shots and varying close-ups, and the visuals help imbue Rob with power and vulnerability in equal measure. While the persistent voice-over of Rob reading his graduate school personal essay as narration seems tacked on rather than poignant, all told, the movie delivers a well-earned emotional gut punch that refreshingly does not come from perpetuating the physical and systemic violence it aims to shed light upon.

Hbo reveals when ‘house of the dragon’ will come to an end.

House of the Dragon

We finally have confirmation from HBO that House of the Dragon has a set end-point, though thankfully it’s not coming any time soon.

After last night’s incredibly underwhelming finale , a lot of fans have told me they’re not even interested in a Season 3. I am the opposite. I’m just annoyed I have to wait likely two more years to get it.

In a press conference Monday, House of the Dragon showrunner, Ryan Condal, announced that the series will come to an end with Season 4. Season 3 is currently being written, Condal revealed, with plans to go into production in early 2025.

One of the big problems with Season 2 appears to be budgetary: HBO slashed the 10 episodes of Season 1 down to just 8 in Season 2, and the big battle so many fans anticipated was shoved off into the next season. Asked whether the next seasons will also be 8 episodes, Condal said:

“I haven’t had discussions with HBO about it. I would just anticipate the cadence of the show, from a dramatic storytelling perspective, will continue to be the same from Season 2 on.”

Writer Sara Hess said the decision to scale back to 8 "wasn't really our choice” which certainly suggests Warner Bros. needed to tighten its Westerosi belt.

The Best Gaming Laptops Under $1,000: Boost Your Games For Less

When Season 1 released as a big hit, George R.R. Martin wrote that “It is going to take four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons, from start to finish.” Clearly, that is not going to happen.

Martin has been oddly silent this season, after heaping much praise on Season 1, and some of his rather vague statements even seem to cast shade at the show and its writers .

For my part, I’m glad we’re getting two more seasons even if they are truncated. With the proper planning, Condal and his team should be able to fit everything in without issue. The trouble is striking a balance between character-driven moments and action, though as I pointed out in my review of the finale , some of the best character development in Game Of Thrones took place during its big battles.

Here’s my video review :

Now streaming on:

The name Hammer used to command a certain level of respect in the annals of horror cinema - from the late 1950s to the early '70s, you could pin the label to some of the campiest, schlockiest, most entertaining creature features around, from camp retellings of Universal monsters to sci-fi Quatermass mysteries. But the Hammer Films of this year's "Doctor Jekyll" is hardly the same company William Hinds and James Carreras built; the opening titles proudly plaster "A John Gore Company" below its production logo. Indeed, for as much as "Doctor Jekyll" rides high on its compelling central performance (and the gender politics therein), the film that surrounds that star turn can't quite hide (or Hyde?) its weightlessness.

This isn't the first time Hammer has put a gender-swapped spin on the acclaimed Robert Louis Stevenson story - see 1971's "Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde," in which a serum transformed a male Henry Jekyll into a libidinous female alter ego. But "Chicken" director Joe Stephenson and screenwriter Dan Kelly-Mulhern have re-adapted the story into a low-fi chamber play whose campy delights take far too long to take murderous shape.

Its delights, apart from Blair Mowat's delightfully outre, baroque score, fall mostly on Eddie Izzard , and her mesmerizingly controlled turn as Dr. Nina Jekyll. She's a reclusive billionaire with a mysterious condition that requires her to take her meds on time (gee, I wonder what happens if she skips a dose?). With her stern handler Sandra ( Lindsay Duncan ) overwhelmed, she puts out a call for hired help, and who should answer but Rob Stevenson ("Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2"'s Scott Chambers ), a baby-faced bad dad fresh out of prison and rehab, trying to get his life together so he can see his daughter.

In its first act, "Doctor Jekyll" plays out like a perverse low-budget spin on " Phantom Thread " - the tortured genius puttering away in their empty home, the fresh-faced muse unwittingly wrapped up in their machinations, the taskmaster training a jaundiced eye at the both of them. But the film struggles to maintain any kind of suspense as to Jekyll's true motivations for hiring Rob, and the secretive nature of her condition; subplots involving motion-sensor cameras, locked rooms, and Rob's drug-addict ex-wife flail about aimlessly before colliding in a bloody mess near the film's end.

To her credit, Izzard holds the lean script aloft with aplomb, and she's a solid 80% of the reason to watch this. She's always been a tremendous performer, but being given the chance to lean so hard into her transness in these more recent roles unfolds new layers of performance that are nothing short of mesmerizing. As Nina, she's prim, quiet, and commanding; she tears into a bowl of "crunchy, nutty corn flakes" with all the fervor of a filet mignon. As Rachel Hyde, she sneers and purrs her way through each line with divine camp. It's hardly Shakespeare - funny, since she just came off a one-woman production of "Hamlet" - but she has tremendous fun with the part.

It's her co-stars that let her down, for the most part. Sure, Lindsey Duncan frowns with the best of them, offering a Lesley Manville-sized fly in the ointment. But Chambers is simply not up to the task of keeping up with any of his co-stars, mugging and pouting and stammering his way through his lines as if the producers just couldn't get Freddie Highmore on the phone.

Of course, it's impossible to ignore "Jekyll"'s implications regarding gender and transness; the original story, after all, is about transformation, of finding the hidden self that lies within and setting it free. By casting a trans woman as Jekyll in the first place, Stephenson complicates that narrative in ways both intriguing and befuddling. After all, both Jekyll and Hyde in this version are women, the split becoming less about her gender and more about her morality. (A black-and-white flashback awkwardly ties Nina to the original Henry Jekyll, though it humorously establishes that the "drug" that keeps Hyde in place comes in a cigarette that glows green when you smoke it. Talk about a hybrid strain.) But as the film barrels towards twists both predictable and not, a final turn throws some deeper confusion into the allegory in ways I can't spoil but would be eager to hear other trans viewers' thoughts on.

At 90 minutes, one could hardly fault "Doctor Jekyll" for being languorous. But it's often too patient for its own good, content to slow-roll its inevitable outcome without giving us much to chew on besides Izzard and some cornflakes. The chance to explore the Jekyll-and-Hyde story through the lens of a late-in-life trans woman is too enticing to botch, especially with a performer as layered as Izzard in the title role. But it teeters too precariously between camp and character study, and never quite lands successfully on either side. And its final minutes seem to imply that, no matter how you identify, the body you truly want to occupy might not really belong to you. That's a troubling implication to unpack.

I Was at the Kamala Harris Rally in Atlanta. What You’re Seeing Is Very Real.

Everything is different..

In the past two years, Vice President Kamala Harris has made so many visits to Georgia that Atlantans frustratedly joke that perhaps she doesn’t know that there are 49 other states or that maybe she’s looking for real estate in the Southern city. But when Harris came to Atlanta on Tuesday night, the tenor of things was noticeably different.

This time, she was visiting not as a Biden surrogate, but as the presumptive Democratic nominee for president. For the first time in a long time, the commentary around her trip—her 15 th since becoming VP—was less about the traffic her motorcade would cause (which it did!) or skepticism about the Biden administration’s need to pander to Black Georgians. This time, her agenda was clear: Harris was in town to rally Democrats to vote for her for president in November. She was making the case for herself.

“I am very clear the path to the White House runs right through this state,” Harris said to an explosive crowd Tuesday night. The audience of 10,000 people—which her campaign told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is the largest she’s drawn in the week since kicking off her campaign—was ecstatic. There was chanting, cheering, singing, and dancing for hours in the lead-up to and throughout the event.

Lining the seats and gathered on the floor of the Georgia State Convocation Center were residents from surrounding neighborhoods and further out suburbs and counties. They spanned generations and races; many wore “Harris for President” tees and buttons, and held signs that said phrases like “Herstory in the Making.” Numerous attendees described the rally as “fun” and “invigorating”—words that haven’t been associated with the Democratic Party much lately. Although Harris didn’t take the stage until just after 7 p.m., supporters began gathering outside the arena at 1 p.m. When it started to rain, they stayed, tucking themselves under corners of the building, jackets, and umbrellas. By 4:30 p.m. the line to get inside was so long it extended along a bridge over the interstate. Ashley Matta, who wouldn’t reveal her age except to say she’s in her “late 30s” and who lives in Atlanta, said she’s never been to a political rally before, but wanted to come to Tuesday’s because she’s excited about the election. “I had to come out to support the first female president,” she said.

The rally itself was a uniquely Atlanta event with the city’s love for hip-hop and passion for activism on display. Before singing her hit “Body,” rapper Megan Thee Stallion said, “I know my ladies in the crowd love their body. And if you want to keep loving your body, you know who to vote for.” Behind her, a banner declared that “Hotties for Harris” was present. Meanwhile, the rapper Quavo—a native Atlantan—gave a speech about admiring Harris’ promise to fight gun violence, saying, “You can’t understand the struggle of gun violence if you’re not in the field or the heart of it, so one thing I learned about working with Vice President Harris is that she always stand on business.” (Quavo’s nephew and fellow Migos rapper Takeoff was fatally shot in 2022.)

It wasn’t just celebrities who came out to support Harris. It felt like the whole Georgia Democratic machine was present. Former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, state Democratic Party chair Rep. Nikema Williams, and Mayor Andre Dickens all spoke ahead of Harris, reiterating her qualifications and praising her record in the Senate and, especially, her work as a prosecutor. They hammered the message that Harris is a prosecutor who believes in the rule of law while Donald Trump is a convicted criminal—contrasts Harris also emphasized in her own speech.

The crew of politicians, especially Abrams, highlighted Harris’ role in the Biden administration during the COVID recovery, in forgiving student loan debt, and in investing in historically Black colleges and universities, and reiterated that even though she entered the 2024 race late, she has been planting the seeds for success for years. After all, remember all those trips to Atlanta?

The crowd danced the Electric Slide and the Cupid Shuffle, and Swag Surfed as the DJ, Tammi Norman, rotated through a playlist of hip-hop, R&B, pop, and Afrobeats. She also led chants and changed lyrics to songs to include Harris’ name. It certainly felt like some songs were chosen to motivate voters, and others, like, say, “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar, were chosen to call out Donald Trump and J.D. Vance for being “weird”—another message Harris hit on in her own speech when she asked the crowd, “By the way, don’t you find some of their [Trump and Vance] stuff just to be plain weird?” (This mirrors a recent Democratic strategy, somewhat pioneered by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, to just call the Republicans “weird” for their political positions, especially on reproductive rights and personal freedoms.)

At another point, the DJ declared, “I know someone who’s not scared to debate” before playing Bone Crusher, Killer Mike, and T.I.’s “Never Scared.” The matter of Trump’s unwillingness to debate Harris came up several times, with Ossoff saying, “Apparently Donald Trump is too scared to debate Vice President Harris. The candidate dodging debates is the candidate losing.” Harris had the final word on the topic when she slowly and deliberately said, “Well, Donald, I do hope you’ll reconsider to meet me on the debate stage because, as the saying goes, ‘If you got something to say, say it to my face,’ ” to roaring cheers.

Throughout the rally, Trump’s name elicited loud boos and chants to “lock him up.” Bridget Jones, 48, who attended the rally with her partner, Brian Shepherd, 53, said her whole family is invested in seeing Harris win. “We’ve heard Donald Trump saying some concerning things and don’t want four more years of that,” she said.

Shepherd said the palpable excitement in the arena was undeniable, and he had a few theories as to why Democrats are fired up and having fun again. For one thing, he said, “it’s nice to witness history, but getting to be a part of it from the ground up is a whole other level.”
