My country, the United States of America, or ‘The Land of the Free’ as I like to call it, has come a long way since 1607. Significant events like the American Revolution, Declaration of independence and the issue of slavery have shaped my country into what it is today – a land for everyone. America is the fourth largest country in the world in terms of area and occupies the third spot in terms of population. Although America has no official language at the national level, 80% of its population aged five years or more speaks only English at home. Spanish is the second most common language and is also the language that is most widely taught as a second language.

Since it is a land of great opportunities, there is a large immigrant population from many countries that has settled here making it one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world. Despite this diversity in terms of culture, sect, and religion, America is a peaceful place with something for everybody. All people have the right to be hard in court and differences are normally settled peacefully using existing laws.

America has 50 states that combine to form the federal union. The US operates under a two party system, the Democrats and the Republicans. It is a capitalist economy that is fueled by abundance of natural resources. US is the largest importer of goods in the world while in terms of the amount of goods exported, it occupies the second spot.

We boast a number of great scientists that have changed the way we live. From Graham Bell’s invention of telephone to Thomas Edison’s first light bulb, Americans have been the frontrunners when it comes to technological innovation. We also have America to thank for the internet. It first started as ARPANET and was a project of the US defense department. However, it has evolved with time, and today, nearly every household has access to the internet making the world a global village.

When it comes to quality education, America is the most popular choice in the world. The US spends more on education per student than any other country in the world. Its institutes of higher education have an esteemed place among universities in the world. Most of the countries of the world in the meantime have taken their own strategy to face the odds of the new millennium for changing a lot of the people and developing of the country.

History: Bangladesh is a small country in South Asia. It was under a colonial rule for 200 years. It became independent in 1971 through Liberation War. During 1971-1990 we had little political stability. Bangladesh includes in the list of least developed countries.

So as a poor country she faces more problems than the world does in the new millennium. The problems and prospects of Bangladesh in the new millennium may be the following.

Poverty: Poverty means pauperism, a situation for which man cannot meet the basic needs of life. It also means a situation where the living standard of the people is below normal. Poverty is a basic problem of Bangladesh. She is one of the poorest countries of the world. So, it is clear that poverty is going to be one of the great problems of Bangladesh in the new millennium.

If we do not remove poverty there would be no development In this situation the government has taken various measures to eliminate poverty from the country. Side by side the non-government organizations are also engaged in various programs for poverty alleviation.

Electricity: Electricity is an indispensable part of modern life. Proper supply of electricity is a pre-condition for economic development of any country. In the new millennium, we are looking for alternative sources. Bangladesh has a long history of the shortage of electricity. 1994, we had 134 days of load shedding for 434 hours.

Then the maximum shortage was 520 MW and the minimum was 29 MW. In January-June 1997 we had 174 days of power shortages and load-shedding occurred for 2165 hours.

In the field of information technology: Information Technology is a part of our life in the new millennium. We cannot think of our modern life without it. In order to get better services and more benefits from the new millennium, the government of Bangladesh is going to set up an information technology village very close to Dhaka city. This would be similar to the software technology parks in India. The future of information technology in Bangladesh is bright.

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology secured the 24th position in the reputed universities in the USA. In the ACM programming contest on the Internet, the performance of Bangladesh, particularly from (BUET) performed better than those from other countries.

In Agriculture: Bangladesh is mainly agricultural land. More than 80% of her people depend on agriculture. Agriculture will be another thrust area in the new millennium. At present, our agriculture is facing the number of problems such as rising salinity, declining soil fertility, soil erosion in the hills etc.

It is high time to take the necessary steps to improve the agricultural section. Otherwise, we fail to face impending new millennium problems. In this situation, high varieties may become the best choice of the new millennium like a country Bangladesh.

Foreign Investment: Bangladesh is a country which badly needs foreign investment for her rapid economic growth and development. Foreign investment helps supply necessary capital to set up industries, ensure the quality of production. The domestic market of the country where investment is made is expended.

New millennium opens a new chapter for investment. The Bangladesh government has taken various steps to attract foreign voltmeters in Agriculture, Fisheries, Agro-based Industries, Leather, Textile, Tourism, Energy etc. The prospects of investment acility of Bangladesh in the new millennium is bright.

The Prime Minister is the Head of the Government and runs the office with the support of the Council of Ministers who form the Cabinet Ministry. Had there been no Hitler and no World War II, it most presumably would have taken another 30 or farther times for India and some of the other colonies to achieve independence.

It is only 2.4 per cent of the total area of the world. Our country has about 1605 per cent of the total population of the world. Thus every seventh person of the world is an Indian. Due to its vastness in size. It is described as a sub- continent. The international boundary of India passes through a variety of land forms- barren desert lands. Green agricultural fields, gushing rivers, snow- clad mountains and densely forested mountains.

The tropic of cancer runs through the middle of the country, dividing into two parts – the North India and the South India. Monsoon climate and various soils lead to a variety of agricultural crops in our country. Long growing season also helps Indian farmer raise agricultural crops throughout the year Various crops such as rice, wheat, barley, maize, jowar, and bajra are grown here. Beside these, we have pulses, oil seeds, sugarcane, potatoes, tea, coffee and fruits. India has been a leading producer of species since time immemorial.

The level of the development of manufacturing industries decides the strength of a country’s economy. We have industries divided into two major groups – agro – based and mineral – based industries. We have textile industries. Textile includes cotton, jute, wool, silk and synthetic fibers. The sugar industry ranks second amongst the agro- industries in India. Uttar Pradesh is the leader producer of sugar.

In India we have a federal form of government. It means that we have two separate levels of government – at the centre and at the state level. At present the Indian Federation includes 25 States and 7 Union territories. The Constitution of India provides for a parliamentary form of government. President is the nominal executive head of the country. A large number of powers are vested in him by the Prime Minister and other members of Council of Ministers. The President is bound to act on the advice of Council of Ministers. The central government has three organs – the Legislature, Executive and Judiciary. The Central Legislative is known as Parliament. The Central Executive includes President, Vice President, Prime Minister an Union Council of Ministers. The judiciary is the Supreme Court of India. The Prime Minister is the ex-officio chairman of the Planning Commission. Thus we see that the Prime Minister is the real ruler of the country.

In my country linguistic, religious, social and political diversity has played an important role in making the Indian culture rich. The Hindu Dharm spread the felling of tolerance. Buddhism and Jainism spread the principle of non- violence and Islam spread the idea of one God.

India stretches from Kashmir in the north to Kanyakumari in the South and from Kandla in the west to Kohima in the east. Transport and communication network is essential for economic integration, social interaction and the defence of the country. We have National Highways, State Highways, District Roads and village roads. Every district city is connected with railway network. In India, big cities are Delhi, the capital of India, Bombay, Chennai, Calcutta, Jaipur, Patna, Nagpur, Agra. The most pious rivers are Ganga, Yumuna, Naravada, Mahanadi , etc. we have the Himalayas in the north, Nilgiri in the south , Vindhyachal in the centre. Our country is called India, Hindustant or Bharat. It is my county. I have been living in it since my birth, I am proud of it. I am always prepared to sacrifice everything even my life for my country.

Many foreign cultures, languages, religions and thoughts influenced the fabric of this country but the base remained unchanged because of its strong foundations. Britishers were the last to slave this country for more than a century. They left no stone unturned to leave their influences permanently. It was the last blow. Which left the masses of this country poor, terror- stricken, fearful, needy and diseased.

Then after a continued struggle of our freedom fighters for long decades our country saw the face of Independence on 15 th August, 1947 form the foreign rule and she became the largest democracy of the world but completely bruised. The Britishers played the dirtiest game of the modern times by encouraging her partition and Pakistan came into being. The process took its tool as thousands of innocent citizens were killed in the frenzy of Hindu- Muslim strives.

Now my country is taking strides towards her development though not so speedily but still satisfactorily. We are proud of our mixed culture and secular democratic set- up. It has raised our prestige in the international community as we have been successfully continuing our development processes and democratic institutions despite many hazards.

I wish my country progress by leaps and bounds and keep its integrity and honour quite intact for all times to come.

Veterans have accused Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz of “embellishing” his military career and abandoning his National Guard battalion, highlighting that the now-vice presidential pick for the Democrats never served in combat and retired from service ahead of his unit’s 2005 deployment to Iraq.

In a letter posted to Facebook in 2018 as he first ran for governor, retired Command Sergeants Major Thomas Behrends and Paul Herr said Walz retired from his 24-year tenure in the National Guard after learning that his battalion would be deployed to Iraq, despite allegedly assuring his fellow troops he would join them.

“On May 16th, 2005, [Walz] quit, betraying his country, leaving the 1-125th Field Artillery Battalion and its Soldiers hanging; without its senior Non-Commissioned Officer, as the battalion prepared for war,” Behrends and Herr wrote.

Walz, 60, wrapped his military career just in time for him to launch his political career the following year, successfully running for Congress in 2006.

Behrends and Herr criticized him for leaving the National Guard for Congress despite being fully aware that he could have requested permission from the Pentagon to seek office while on active duty.

Walz further dodged the necessary paperwork to ensure a smooth transition out of military service and “instead … slithered out the door,” the pair added, with his retirement filing showing “soldier not available for signature.”

The National Guard members also accused the now-two-term Minnesota governor of having “embellished and selectively omitted facts of his military career for years.”

The letter was first unearthed by the Daily Wire .

Still, Walz has said he has “an honorable record” — and other service members who led the same battalion have defended him.

“He was a great soldier,” Joseph Eustice, who served 32 years in the National Guard, told the Star Tribune in 2022.

“When he chose to leave, he had every right to leave,” added Eustice, who indicated that other attacks on Walz’s record may have been made by disgruntled soldiers who were passed up for promotions.

Another National Guard member who served under Walz said that the future US lawmaker was eyeing a run for Congress earlier than 2005.

“Would the soldier look down on him because he didn’t go with us? Would the common soldier say, ‘Hey, he didn’t go with us, he’s trying to skip out on a deployment?’ And he wasn’t,” Al Bonnifield recalled to Minnesota Public Radio of Walz’s concerns about dipping out before the deployment to Iraq.

“He talked with us for quite a while on that subject. He weighed that decision to run for Congress very heavy [sic],” Bonnifeld added. “He loved the military, he loved the guard, he loved the soldiers he worked with.”

“We all do what we can. I’m proud I did 24 years,” Walz has said about his service.

Walz joined the National Guard after high school and had served in the 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery before his retirement, where he obtained the rank of command sergeant major.

During his subsequent tenure in Congress, Walz came out in opposition against then-President George W. Bush’s plans to increase troop levels in Iraq.

From the vantage of the American supermarket aisle, the modern food system looks like a kind of miracle. Everything has been carefully cultivated for taste and convenience — even those foods billed as organic or heirloom — and produce regarded as exotic luxuries just a few generations ago now seems more like staples, available on demand: avocados, mangoes, out-of-season blueberries imported from Uruguay.

But the supermarket is also increasingly a diorama of the fragility of a system — disrupted in recent years by the pandemic, conflict and, increasingly, climate change. What comes next? Almost certainly, more disruptions and more hazards, enough to remake the whole future of food.

The world as a whole is already facing what the Cornell agricultural economist Chris Barrett calls a “food polycrisis.” Over the past decade, he says, what had long been reliable global patterns of year-on-year improvements in hunger first stalled and then reversed. Rates of undernourishment have grown 21 percent since 2017. Agricultural yields are still growing, but not as quickly as they used to and not as quickly as demand is booming. Obesity has continued to rise, and the average micronutrient content of dozens of popular vegetables has continued to fall . The food system is contributing to the growing burden of diabetes and heart disease and to new spillovers of infectious diseases from animals to humans as well.

And then there are prices. Worldwide, wholesale food prices, adjusted for inflation, have grown about 50 percent since 1999, and those prices have also grown considerably more volatile, making not just markets but the whole agricultural Rube Goldberg network less reliable. Overall, American grocery prices have grown by almost 21 percen t since President Biden took office, a phenomenon central to the widespread perception that the cost of living has exploded on his watch. Between 2020 and 2023, the wholesale price of olive oil tripled ; the price of cocoa delivered to American ports jumped by even more in less than two years. The economist Isabella Weber has proposed maintaining the food equivalent of a strategic petroleum reserve, to buffer against shortages and ease inevitable bursts of market chaos.

Price spikes are like seismographs for the food system, registering much larger drama elsewhere — and sometimes suggesting more tectonic changes underway as well. More than three-quarters of the population of Africa, which has already surpassed one billion, cannot today afford a healthy diet; this is where most of our global population growth is expected to happen this century, and there has been little agricultural productivity growth there for 20 years. Over the same time period, there hasn’t been much growth in the United States either.

One of the Most Conservative State Supreme Courts in the Country Just Rebuked Dobbs

The Utah Supreme Court, a body with a clear conservative majority , surprised many observers last week when it handed down a ruling blocking enforcement of the state’s new abortion ban , which criminalizes virtually all abortions from the moment of fertilization . The law, which was set to go into effect in 2022, was blocked by a trial court while the litigation continued, a decision affirmed by the state Supreme Court last week. The Utah decision is not just a reminder that conservative judges faced with the prospect of retention elections may be afraid to gut abortion rights; it also spotlights the chaos and confusion produced by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision undoing a right to choose abortion—and problems with using history and tradition as the only guide to identifying our most cherished rights.

Utah fought the lower court injunction by stressing the kind of argument the U.S. Supreme Court’s supermajority made in reversing Roe v. Wade : arguing that there could be no right to abortion rooted in Utah’s history and tradition because Utah law had long criminalized abortion, and that the rationale of the Dobbs ruling dismantling the federal right to abortion applied here at the state level. The judges of the Utah Supreme Court agreed that the state’s constitution should be interpreted as conservative judges often suggest—in line with “what constitutional language meant to Utahns when it entered the constitution.” But the fact that the state court embraced originalism did not mean that it was ready to let Utah’s ban go into effect.

The relevant question, the court asked, was which broad principles would have been recognized by state residents when the state’s constitution was established. Utahans might not have recognized or even thought about a right to abortion per se, but that was not the point. Looking for too direct an analogue, the court reasoned, was unnecessary or even perverse. “Failure to distinguish between principles and application of those principles,” the court reasoned, “would hold constitutional protections hostage to the prejudices of the 1890s.”

Even the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative supermajority seems aware of the problem that Utah’s high court identified. In Rahimi v. United States , the court dodged a potentially disastrous ruling that the Second Amendment made it unconstitutional to deny access to a firearm to someone who posed a credible threat of violence to his partner or minor child. The question was not whether the United States could identify a regulation exactly like the one Zackey Rahimi was challenging; instead, the court would focus on whether the “challenged regulation is consistent with the principles that underpin the Nation’s regulatory tradition.”

The Utah decision shows that the Supreme Court may have assigned itself a sort of Hobson’s choice: binding itself to the biases of the 19 th century or embracing a looser, principle-driven approach that is quite different from the vision of history and tradition the conservative justices have embraced.

The Utah court also highlighted how much the Supreme Court hasn’t told us about how a history-and-tradition test works—and how differently judges can approach it. Dobbs suggests that there can’t be a right to abortion given that states in the 19 th century criminalized abortion (albeit, in some cases, many years after the relevant constitutional provision came into effect). The Utah court thought that it isn’t so simple. The judges tried to account for what regular people, including those who could not vote at the time, thought about which rights were protected. The majority, for example, stressed evidence including a book written by a female doctor about the beliefs and practices of Utah women in the 1890s, and acknowledged that regular Americans might have believed that abortion was moral and even legal before quickening, the point at which fetal movement could be detected, even as criminal laws sometimes eliminated that distinction. There are other unanswered questions too. What is the relationship between originalism or history and tradition—and how much do the conservative justices care about history from after the relevant constitutional provision is put in place? What kinds of evidence count—and from which time periods? Can a court pay attention to those who were marginalized at that time or only those with power in the era to write their views into law?

The Utah decision shows how unstable Dobbs is—and how easy it is for courts to use historical evidence to reach their preferred results. Looking to history and tradition does not absolve judges of responsibility for making decisions that are unpopular or unjust because, as the Utah court recognized, historical analysis allows courts so much flexibility to decide whose history matters and why. It is not the founders who make choices about when and how to look at the past. It is the judges faced with the critical questions of today. Dobbs promised that history would constrain a court that might want to dabble in politics. In truth, as the Utah decision implies , Dobbs treats history as “a type of Rorschach test where we only see what we are already inclined to see .”
