Kaduva Movie Review: An Unabashedly Old-School Mass Movie That Pulls No Punches

Cast: Prithviraj Sukumaran , Vivek Oberoi , Samyuktha Menon

Director: Shaji Kailas

Writer: Jinu Abraham

The joy of watching Shaji Kailas' Kaduva on the big screen isn't that of discovering a satisfying new mass action film through the course of its runtime. Set in 90's Kerala, in what's usually described as the 'achayan belt', the film's backdrop allows for the lawlessness of a Western, inhabited by the kind of ego-bruised macho men who've never heard of "talking it out". Come to think of it, the real fun of Kaduva is closer in spirit to finding a fine HD print of an old Shaji Kailas movie, taking us back to a time that pre-dates everyday phrases like political correctness, nuance and most importantly… massu .

You sense this right from the way the film begins by setting the stage for a bash fest. Kaduvakunnel Kuriachan (Prithviraj) is being escorted into his prison cell, but his myth-making has already begun even before he slowly sets his foot in. Even before he arrives, we get two phone calls, one guaranteeing his comfort and another, his death. A set of goons are sent in right before so he doesn't last the night. Along with these arrivals are also a box of cigars, and a briefcase full of things he cannot live without. So, when the first fight begins a few minutes later, we're also welcoming Shaji Kailas to the renovated new world of mass he built decades ago.

This world includes everything from a deep itch to beat up every policeman posted here along with his dizzyingly fast shots that make moments out of nothing. In an instance, a casual one-second shot of Kuriachan opening and shutting a car door demanded that a whole camera gets rigged onto its door for one effect. In another, a crane shot takes us through hundreds of trees in an estate as though a body-cam has been strapped onto Tarzan. And when it comes to the all-important mundu madakkikuthal scene, DOP Abhinandan Ramanujam's camera dances back and forth to match the creases of the mundu . Along with Prithviraj's own powers at becoming the achayan, there are not many who can define mallu swag like Shaji can.

One of the reasons he's able to pull it off is its 90's setting. If Joshiy, with Porinju Mariam Jose , recreated the decade he owned anyway, this is Shaji Kailas doing the same with his decade. That 90's feeling is also very much a part of the writing. So, when an elaborate scene is written around one man chasing down another to communicate one bit of information, the lack of mobile phones in the era springs at you at a script level. These are little things that keep our expectations in check even as the film treads through a series of beats you've already seen coming.

That familiarity is one of Kaduva' s biggest assets. This is no place for realistic action scenes that look and feel dirty. Everything is set a few notches higher than normal and the feeling is also that of the Malayalam action film going back to its better, bigger days. And when Shaji Kailas chooses to use the roar of a kaduva (like he did in Narasimham) to compliment these action scenes, it feels strangely nostalgic. And in terms of a plot, even the manner in which the State politics of the time is woven into the screenplay with extremely familiar characters, contribute to this feeling.

You can't underline just how much such ideas have contributed to making Kaduva a satisfying experience. So, when the film introduces a man with mental health issues as a serious weapon against the hero, you have to calm yourself down and remember the film it wants to be. The same goes with women. Their role in the screenplay is that of merely being plot points to further rattle the male ego.

Yet you have to give it to Jakes Bejoy 's background score and Abhinandan Ramanujam's camera for working overtime to re-interpret what could have been a 30-year-old film. Not only do they get exactly what the director's trying to make, but they also give it their own individual tributes to make something old feel new. The result is a balls-out unpretentious action movie that owns every second of its pitch as an ultimate male revenge fantasy.

Kaduva review: Action is the hero in this Shaji Kailas-Prithviraj drama

Princy Alexander

It's been nearly two decades since the Shaji Kailas magic worked its charm on the audience. The director of superhit movies like 'Aaram Thampuran' and 'Narasimham' may have been struggling for years to revive that charm, but with 'Kaduva', it looks like the senior filmmaker has finally found his pace with the audience, again.

The movie can easily be called Shaji's comeback. Though it definitely is no 'Aaram Thampuran' nor 'Commissioner', the movie has that kind of content that will definitely pull an audience who loves mass action entertainers to the theatres.

'Kaduva', scripted by Jinu Abraham and starring Prithviraj and Vivek Oberoi, is set in Pala in the 1990s when mobile phones and luxury cars were yet to penetrate the market. Prithviraj plays Kaduvakunnel Kuriachan, a rich planter and bar owner, whose fiery rivalry with the all-influential police officer Ouseph Chandy (Vivek Oberoi) forms the entire drama.

This is Vivek's second outing as an antagonist in Mollywood and he plays his role to perfection, with the right blend of villainy and charisma. His towering physique also gives him the edge making the fight scenes between both him and Prithviraj, an enthralling watch. The chemistry between the duo is undeniable and some scenes between them remind you of the action sequences in 'Ayyappanum Koshiyum'.

Prithviraj has once again proved why he is a bankable movie star who has the ability to mint gold for filmmakers who choose to use him wisely. Though Shaji Kailas's earlier collaboration with Prithviraj, 'Simhasanam' was a disaster, the director has been careful not to repeat his mistake this time. The film rides high on action and Prithviraj has done justice to his role, delivering the right punch at the right time. He also keeps proving he is good at pulling off mass entertainers and delivering what his audience wants.

The script is definitely star-driven and male-dominated, so there is little scope for actors like Samyuktha Menon who plays Elsa, Kuriachan's wife, in the movie.

Alancier as Kuriachan's former teacher Varkey and Baiju as friend Korah also add to the entertainment quotient.

Seema does a good job playing Ouseph Chandy's mother, while Kalabhavan Shajon as a police officer and Arjun Ashokan as Kuriachan's neighbour also do justice to their roles. Though the movie is a little predictable, the makers surprise us with twists and turns, which help in building the suspense of the film. The power-punched dialogues and top-level action sequences elevate the movie to another level. The music and BGM by Jakes Bejoy is also impressive. Overall, if you are a fan of action films, the movie is a must-watch in theatres.

‘Kaduva’ film review: Shaji Kailas-Prithviraj deliver a predictable, old-school actioner

At its core, the film is the story of an ego clash that crosses all limits.

A decade is a long time for a filmmaker to stay away from the medium. That’s how long it has been since Shaji Kailas made his last film, and Malayalam cinema has changed unrecognisably. But, in his years in hibernation, it appears Shaji Kailas has not changed. With Kaduva , he loudly proclaims that he still swears by mass entertainers.

Although the film is based on a real story, there might be more reasons why he has set his latest movie in the 1990s, a period which witnessed the release of his most successful movies and a period that ended up setting a template for a string of duds in Malayalam, some of it made by Shaji himself.

At its core, Kaduva is the story of an ego clash that crosses all limits. Planter Kaduvakkunnel Kuriyachan (Prithviraj Sukumaran) locks horns with Inspector General Joseph Chandy (Vivek Oberoi) over issues related to the local parish, which snowballs into something big enough to put the State government in trouble. Most amusing is the fact that it all begins from an old woman's donation of a piano to a church.

It would be interesting to compare the ego clash here to the one in Ayyappanum Koshiyum . While that movie initially stands with the underdog and later shows how the ego consumes him too, in Kaduva , it is a clash between two equally powerful, privileged men, one who is painted all black, and the other in all white, even in his attire.

Everything that Kuriyachan does is seen through a heroic lens, including the use of his hereditary money power to play political games, like a crude form of modern-day electoral bond. But then, everything gets justified when it comes to a rightful feeling of revenge.

The only time he is shown to be in the wrong is when he publicly insults the mother of his nemesis, an act for which his wife Elsa (Samyuktha Menon) questions him (the only time this character gets to say something of substance). But even this act is justified in the following scene, which is written just to show why the woman deserved it.

Kaduva is also the story of the misuse of official machinery to settle personal scores, and the fact that some of it happened in real life makes it even more shocking.

Jinu V. Abraham’s script does not attempt to spring any surprises, rather it banks fully on the strength of the mass scenes, of which there are some. Shaji goes back to his tried-and-tested, adrenaline-pumping methods, but not all of them work. However, these could still be welcomed by the audience who wish for more mass action movies in Malayalam.

Shaji does manage to deliver that, dipped in more than an ounce of predictability, but for those looking for some novelty, Kaduva might not be it. This is despite it being a notch better than all of the work that Shaji has done post-2000.

Kaduva is running in theatres.

'Kaduva' movie review: Director Shaji Kailas returns to form with Prithviraj-starrer

During a pivotal juncture in Kaduva, when its hero Kaduvakkunnel Kuriyachan (Prithviraj) is at a low phase, he summons his allies to a hotel. The channel that's on is Doordarshan. The familiar theme immediately brought back memories of discovering, as a kid in the 90s, Malayalam movies for the first time on the channel, some of which had Shaji Kailas at the helm.

Kaduva is a period film very much in the vein of the recent Mammootty-starrer Bheeshma Parvam in that it takes you back in time to not just the time of Doordarshan but Maruti Omnis, Contessas, and the Mercedes Benz 230.

At one point, I wondered if the white Contessa that Vivek Oberoi drives was the same one that carried the thugs that Suresh Gopi fought in the opening scene of Commissioner. At another, I wondered whether Prithviraj's Mercedes Benz 230 was the same one used by Mohanlal in Aaraam Thampuran.

But it's not just the vehicles that appear as callbacks to the Shaji Kailas movies of yore, but some of the most memorable moments from The King, Valyettan, Commissioner, and others: The hero tells a male character that he has only seen half of it (Valyettan); the Chief Minister who is a Guruyarooppan devotee (The King); the husband-wife kitchen romance (Commissioner, Shivam, F.I.R); Janardhanan playing a CM once again (Thalasthanam, F.I.R); a riot scene that recalls the opening from The King; the hero's intro scene where water is a background element (Narasimham), and more...

But above all, Kaduva brings back the Shaji Kailas I adore after a couple of decades. It brings back the filmmaker who showed more grace and restraint long ago. It brings back the filmmaker who paid attention to movie props and involved them in his composition in a way that looked cool only in his films.

Yes, I missed the characteristically fiery dialogues of Renji Panicker, but at the same time, I’m not sure if such lines would work if done today. By the way, who writes like Renji Panicker nowadays? I also missed the music of Rajamani. But, hey, Shaji Kailas is back!

Recently, Lucifer and Bheeshma Parvam revived Malayalis' interest in well-made - I repeat, well-made - 'mass' entertainers after a long time. I had a blast with both, but one common complaint with these two films that I heard was "not enough action" and the fact that we didn’t get to see the leading man as much as we wanted.

Though Kaduva doesn't possess the overall sophistication of the above two films, it successfully takes care of these two complaints, even if most of the film relies on familiar beats.

Prithviraj is in almost every frame, and he gets to do a lot of fights, some of which with the kind of Tamil/Telugu cinema-inspired slow-motion that even the former (a 'protege' of Shaji Kailas) directed in Lucifer.

Thankfully, it's not overdone, and I'm glad that Shaji Kailas avoided the excessive camera gimmicks that gave one a headache in something like, say, The King and the Commissioner. That's not to say the filmmaker completely ignores any opportunity to swirl his cameras.

In the few instances where he does it, he makes it look cool, like in a nighttime chase involving Vivek Oberoi or in the aftermath of a fight scene that saw Kuriyachan smashing a few cops into a pulp.

Kaduva opens with a fight scene inside a prison, which also serves as Kuriyachan’s intro that begins medias res. He is there for a reason, explained later when the film visits events from a few weeks back. The central issue is Kuriyachan's tussle with the entire police force in the area—that is, the cops who came after the Kuriyachan-friendly ones left.

Leading them is DIG Joseph Chandy (Vivek Oberoi), who eventually becomes Kuriyachan's nemesis after a remark about his character that deeply offended him. As Prithviraj joked in some of his interviews, Kaduva can be seen as the third entry in his 'ego' trilogy after Driving Licence and Ayyappanum Koshiyum.

One amusing factor that Kaduva and Ayyappanum Koshiyum share is actor Kottayam Ramesh, who shows up in an integral moment as an ally of Kuriyachan. I couldn't help but smile at the thought. Kaduva is essentially the massier counterpart of Ayyappanum Koshiyum and Driving Licence but without the storytelling finesse of those two.

Having said that, the main factor that works to Kaduva's advantage is Prithviraj's casting. Kuriyachan's degree of arrogance and stubbornness warranted an actor of Prithviraj's stature. Kuriyachan is essentially what Hareendran from Driving Licence would've been if he were a wealthy planter with a family of four.

And Shaji Kailas frames Kuriyachan with the same adoration that Sergio Leone had for his badass characters in Once Upon A Time in the West or The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Kuriyachan is precisely the sort of movie character you wish to see when going through a stressful phase. I also found the bond between the characters of Arjun Ashokan and Prithviraj heartwarming.

Though I wished Samyuktha Menon got to do more, I was at least glad to see her playing a wife who doesn't approve of every single thing her husband does. Elsa is the kind of woman who would conceal some facts to protect him.

Of course, as someone watching the film, one would disagree with her behaviour because we want Kuriyachan to find out what happened and then go and beat the s*** out of those who dared to trespass into his abode.

However, the film's biggest flaw, I felt, is Joseph Chandy. He isn't a compelling villain. We get a reason for why he became corrupt, which makes sense from his point of view, but it's flimsy at best. Wouldn't we find plenty of criminals with such a simple excuse for their transgressions?

Considering how Vivek aced the baddie game in Lucifer, I hoped to see a character with more dimensions. (Actor Vineeth has dubbed for him this time around too.) However, this is not a criticism of his performance because he behaves like a man whose ego is hurt, but as a character, he seemed so... basic.

As for Jakes Bejoy's score, aside from one of the main themes and a church festival track ('Pala Palli Thiruppalli'), it fails to make much of an impact. One gets the feeling that Jakes had recycled one of his previous original scores (Kalki, perhaps?).

Abhinandan Ramanujam gets the director of photography credit, but I heard he is not the only one who worked on the film. Sujith Vaassudev's name popped up at one point too. So, who shot what? Are there other cinematographers aside from these two? I'm confused. Whoever it is, Kaduva gets the 90s' aesthetic right, aside from the period details, of course.

I always say that an action movie becomes pointless if the characters - and the actors playing them - don't have the necessary attitude. They would have also failed to generate excitement if the build-up wasn't strong enough.

We need to see the bad guys do something that would provoke our ire so that when, finally, the hero returns for payback, we take delight in every punch that lands. Thankfully, Kaduva follows this philosophy to a T, and I had quite a blast.

Kaduva Director: Shaji Kailas Cast: Prithviraj, Samyuktha Menon, Vivek Oberoi, Rahul Madhav, Alencier Ley Lopez, Baiju Rating: 3.5/5

Kaduva Movie Review: Prithviraj's film is a battle between men with fragile egos

Director shaji kailas's kaduva, starring prithviraj sukumaran and vivek oberoi, is a massy version of ayyappanum koshiyum. the film entertains when it sticks to the genre, says our review..

Listen to Story

Prithviraj Sukumaran's Kaduva hit the theatres on July 7.

  • Kaduva is director Shaji Kailas's comeback.
  • Prithviraj Sukumaran and Vivek Oberoi play lead roles in the film.
  • The film hit the theatres on July 7 in multiple languages.

What happens when two men with strong political connections fight it out with each other because of their fragile egos? Most of these problems are usually resolved with an apology. But no, this doesn’t apply to our heroes and villains. They get back at each other, back and forth, to prove one of them is superior. No, I am not talking about Ayyappanum Koshiyum. This is also the story of Shaji Kailas’s Kaduva. Sadly, both are the same. While the former is intelligent, the latter relies more on mass moments than sweet retribution.

Like Ayyappanum Koshiyum, Kaduva revolves around Kaduvakunnel Kuriachan (Prithviraj Sukumaran), who owns a plantation, and Inspector General Joseph Chandy (Vivek Oberoi). Both men bruise each other's egos and what happens next is a battle between them.

Late director Sachy’s Ayyappanum Koshiyum, though three hours long, was interesting enough to keep everyone invested in it. Prithviraj and Biju Menon get back at each other in interesting ways. The entire film is centred on how they take revenge. What Kaduva lacks is inventiveness. Director Shaji Kailas’s Kaduva is old wine in a new bottle. Billed as the director’s comeback, Kaduva is a mass entertainer with slo-mo walks, fight sequences and punch dialogues.

While we get a full-blown introduction for Kuriyachan, Vivek Oberoi’s Joseph is reduced to what we call a supporting actor. He is not put on the same pedestal as Prithviraj and hence when he is shown as the egoistic villain, we are not able to buy the fact. Joseph’s character is always in the background while his sidekicks get the job done for him. So, Joseph is never in the picture, most of the time. This is one of the major drawbacks of Kaduva.

Unlike Ayyappanum Koshiyum, Kaduva isn’t misogynistic. While Prithviraj’s character in Ayyappanum Koshiyum is a wife-beater, here, his wife Elsa (Samyuktha Menon) points out when he goes out of line. And Kuriyachan listens to him. Similarly, the women in the world of Kaduva have some agency and they are not just background actors.

Prithviraj Sukumaran’s performance is picture-perfect as Kuriyachan. As an egoistic man and a doting father, he is just phenomenal. Vivek Oberoi delivered an adequate performance, which was apt for his role. Samyuktha Menon, Arjun Ashokan, Kalabhavan Shajohn and Baiju Sanatosh do not have much to the story of the two men. Yet, they made their mark in the screentime they get.

Jakes Bejoy’s music is enjoyable and reminiscent of Ayyappanum Koshiyum. Similarly, Abhinandhan Ramanujam’s cinematography and editor Shameeer Muhammed’s editing blend well with the theme of a commercial entertainer.

Kaduva is entertaining despite its predictability. But, a little bit of inventiveness could have elevated Kaduva more.

2.5 out of 5 stars for Kaduva.

After several legal and Covid-19 related delays, Shaji Kailas's Kaduva has finally made it to the theatres, marking Kailas's comeback after 8 years. Starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Samyuktha Menon, and Vivek Oberoi in leading roles, Kaduva is an action film. Joining Sukumaran, Menon, and Oberoi in the cast are Baiju, Arjun Ashokan, Kalabhavan Shajon, and Seema in supporting roles.

Kaduva follows Kaduvakunnel Kurian Koruthu AKA Kaduvakunnel Kuravachan (Sukumaran), a young and successful planter from a renowned Christian family in Pala. Known in his hometown as Kaduva, Kurian is one of the town's respected and feared residents. His life goes on a downward spiral when he clashes with another resident, Joseph Chandy (Oberoi). The development of this battle of egos and the resulting impact in their lives and that of those around them forms the crux of the film's story.

Kaduva is a pure action flick. With stylishly shot fight sequences and a larger-than-life lead character, the Prithviraj starrer is a delight for mass entertainment movie lovers. Cinematographer Abinandhan Ramanujam and editor Shameer Muhammed must be given due credit for giving us some goosebumps-inducing scenes in the film. It is such scenes that make the movie a great theatre experience.

Aside from the action, which makes up 60-70% of the movie, Kaduva's screenplay from Jinu V Abraham could have been more exciting. While portions of the first and second half seem slow, much of the film's pace is fitting to the narrative. The ego clash between the two central characters are well developed, making the story's progress believable. Adding to the mass value of the film are the punch dialogues; while some seem lengthy, the overall effect is whistle-worthy.

What takes the cake in Kaduva, however, is Jakes Bejoy's music. With a catchy score for central characters, Bejoy captures the audience's attention early on. The action sequences become richer with the music in the background. The songs are noteworthy as well, especially Paalvarnna Kuthiramel, with its lyrics apt for the situation.

Kaduva is an out-and-out action film and a very formulaic one at that. The movie has several typical aspects of a Shaji Kailas mass entertainer. In fact, the Prithviraj starrer will remind viewers of Kailas's previous works, including Narasimham and Valliettan. All the basic frameworks and archetypes of these movies can be found in Kaduva, as well. However, charming performances from Sukumaran, Oberoi, and the rest of the supporting cast almost make up for the predictability, making it a good watch for action lovers.

‘Kaduva’ public review: 5 things that the audience loved about Prithviraj Sukumaran’s action entertainer

‘Kaduva’ public review: 5 things that the audience loved about Prithviraj Sukumaran’s action entertainer

If you don’t speak Malayalam, you wouldn’t know what “Kaduva” means. And if, like us, you have started the movie simply with some blind faith in Malayalam cinema, without having previously seen the trailer for the film, you will be thrown off by the first few minutes. It starts with a police officer asking one of the inmates if he knows someone by the name of Kuriyaachen, aka Kaduva. The prisoner, in awe, reveals that this is no ordinary man, and his name means “tiger,” which is akin to his personality. It was at this moment that we knew that we were going to sit through a masala potboiler. Somehow, this entire genre has dissolved itself into a labyrinth of predictable plots, and our expectations immediately plummeted because of that. But our job requires us to keep tasting the old wine in new bottles without prejudice. And that is what we did for the two-and-a-half hour runtime of “Kaduva.” Let us see if this movie really managed to be something different, or maybe it should have taken itself less seriously.

Spoilers Ahead

What Started The Feud Between Ousupputti And Kuriyaachen?

The story is about a man named Kuriyaachen, who is living an idyllic life as a rich planter in the small town of Pala. He is well known for his brash but somewhat Godfather-like attitude at the place. One day, he receives a letter from a nearby parish warning him about the priest coming to their church. The letter says that the father, Robin Poovammara, is a sexual harasser and asks Kuriyaachen to teach him a lesson. He decides to keep an eye on the priest.

At his first Mass, the priest is gifted a piano by one of the locals, who happens to be IG Joseph Chandy, aka Ousupputti’s mother. He says that anybody who wishes to learn the piano can visit him. Kuriyaachen is wary of this, especially because a young girl expresses an interest in piano lessons. Father Robin tries to move the piano to his personal chambers but is stopped by Kuriyaachen. He says that the piano was gifted to the church and not to the priest. He challenges the father that he will get Ousupputti’s mother to say so in the church.

But unfortunately, when he brings it up at the next meeting, she says that the piano was a personal gift. This comes as a shock to Kuriyaachen, who has been assured by her that she will speak the truth. Hurt by this, he says a few inappropriate things, causing Ousupputti to come to her defense. A fight ensues between both men, with the latter vowing to destroy Kuriyaachen’s life. And he makes good on that vow. Ousupputti has a chunk of the police force transferred to another place. All of those officers were supporters of Kuriyaachen. Next, he buys the land in front of his house and makes plans to turn it into a cemetery. He causes a fight in Kuriyaachen’s bar and causes it to get shut down. Not just that, he beats up his friends and has them arrested on fabricated charges.

Throughout it all, Kuriyaachen passively accepts it. Other than the one fight scene where he beats up the officers who were about to assault him, he is silent throughout the suffering. He is locked up in jail for 14 days, and when he goes back home, things are worse. He finds his daughter injured, and by the way she is acting, he can tell that the cause was more than a fall from the stairs. Tessa confesses to him that the priest, Robin Poovammara, had come to their house and tried to sexually assault Elsa, Kuriyaachen’s wife. While defending her mother, she injured herself. Kuriyaachen is furious but doesn’t react. He also doesn’t react when his late father’s car is taken away, and he is silent when he comes to know that one of his friends has been rendered grievously injured due to the police officer, SI Dominic Benjamin, who has a vendetta against Kuriyaachen.

We don’t understand the reason for the silence. More than half the movie is done, and we are getting bored now. And that’s when the answers start revealing themselves. The CM of Kerala, Ananthanathan, has resigned, and it looks like Kuriyaachen is responsible for that. When he was in jail, Kuriyaachen met a former acquaintance of his who later joined politics and is now serving the opposition party. He has proof of the CM’s corruption and can get him to resign if presented with the evidence in front of the alliance. But they need a sponsor for funds to convince the members who might not agree. Kuriyaachen agrees to do that. And now that the CM is no longer in power, he releases his Kaduva within. We cringe as we write that, but we understand that this was exactly the movie writer’s intent. A tiger patiently waits for its prey while hunting, and that is what Kuriyaachen had been doing so far, waiting for the right time. He beats up Robin for attacking his wife and puts Inspector Dominic in his place. He threatens him to return his father’s car as soon as possible. This is also followed by him having Ousupputti’s promotion frozen and having him removed from law and order. When Ousupputti goes to meet the ex-CM and tries to transfer his assets, he is caught and takes the blame for it, out of loyalty. Can we just say that we are fans of Prithviraj Sukumaran’s effortless arrogance in this role? We really wish he had a better script to work with.

‘Kaduva’ Ending Explained: Does Kuriyaachen Manage To Take Revenge From Ousupputti?

So far, the answer has been a yes. But it is now Ousupputti’s turn to strike. He hires a hitman from jail and tasks him with killing Kuriyaachen. But let’s not forget that Kuriyaachen is still the hero of the story, a larger-than-life character who can beat 10 people at once. So, of course, he is the one to beat up the goons and save the day. An enraged Ousupputti jumps into the fray, and the two men fight it out. As he is lying down, unable to fight further, Kuriyaachen tells him that he is ending it, and it is Ousupputti’s choice if he wants to take this further.

The latter just collapses. In the next scene, he is sentenced to a jail term as the assets he was delivering were considered to be his. Right as he is about to leave to serve his time, Kuriyaachen meets him. The men have a conversation about how their feud is not over, and it will be continued. And that is probably what we will see in the second part of this movie.

Final Thoughts: What Works And What Doesn’t? What To Expect From The Sequel To “Kaduva”?

Like we said before, this movie is like old wine in a new bottle that just fails to be entertaining. Most commercial pot boilers, even with their senseless plots, still manage to attract an audience because their over-the-top theatrics guarantee a good time, if not pushed to the limit. There is no subtlety about it, and it is not even an expectation. This movie tried to do that and ended up making it a bland film. As much as Kuriyaachen is a delight to watch on screen, what was he even doing? And Vivek Oberoi is making a strong space for himself as the villain in South Indian movies. But the script forgot to make him menacing. And that took away the thrill of seeing ‘just desserts’ being served.

If there is a sequel, we will probably see more of the politics play out. Ousupputti is owed a favor by the ex-CM, and we will see how that works. Also, there is a hint of a backstory for him, which might be elaborated on in the upcoming part. But if we are being completely honest, we don’t want to see it, because we are just not interested. It was a weak plot with an uninteresting cliffhanger. The only saving grace was Prithviraj Sukumaran’s charm, but we will just watch the “ Jana Gana Mana ” sequel for it. Or stalk him on Instagram. He is truly a class apart, and we wish to see more of him. But not in films like “Kaduva.” Thus, we will give it a strict pass and keep our fingers crossed for better work from Malayalam cinema in the future.

“Kaduva” is a 2022 Drama Thriller film directed by Shaji Kailas.

Kaduva Movie Review: Shaji Kailas returns to form, with Prithviraj Sukumaran in tow

Rating: ( 3.5 / 5).

During a pivotal juncture in Kaduva , when its hero Kaduvakkunnel Kuriyachan (Prithviraj) is at a low phase, he summons his allies to a hotel. At one point, I wondered if the white Contessa that Vivek Oberoi drives was the same one that carried the thugs that Suresh Gopi fought in the opening scene of Commissioner . At another, I wondered whether Prithviraj's Mercedes Benz 230 was the same one used by Mohanlal in Aaraam Thampuran .

Director: Shaji Kailas

Cast: Prithviraj, Samyuktha Menon, Alencier, Baiju

But it's not just the vehicles that appear as callbacks to the Shaji Kailas movies of yore, but some of the most memorable moments from The King, Valyettan, Commissioner , and others: The hero tells a male character that he has only seen half of it ( Valyettan ); the Chief Minister who is a Guruyarooppan devotee ( The King ); the husband-wife kitchen romance ( Commissioner, Shivam, FIR ); Janardhanan playing a CM once again ( Thalasthanam, F.I.R ); a riot scene that recalls the opening from The King ; the hero's intro scene where water is a background element ( Narasimham ), and more...

But above all, Kaduva brings back the Shaji Kailas I adore after a couple of decades. It brings back the filmmaker who showed more grace and restraint long ago. It brings back the filmmaker who paid attention to movie props and involved them in his composition in a way that looked cool only in his films. Yes, I missed the characteristically fiery dialogues of Renji Panicker, but at the same time, I'm not sure if such lines would work if done today. By the way, who writes like Renji Panicker nowadays? I also missed the music of Rajamani. But, hey, Shaji Kailas is back!

Recently, Lucifer and Bheeshma Parvam revived Malayalis' interest in well-made -- I repeat, well-made -- 'mass' entertainers after a long time. I had a blast with both, but one common complaint with these two films that I heard was "not enough action" and the fact that we didn't get to see the leading man as much as we wanted. Though Kaduva doesn't possess the overall sophistication of the above two films, it successfully takes care of these two complaints, even if most of the film relies on familiar beats. Prithviraj is in almost every frame, and he gets to do a lot of fights, some of which with the kind of Tamil/Telugu cinema-inspired slow-motion that even the former (a 'protege' of Shaji Kailas) directed in Lucifer . Thankfully, it's not overdone, and I'm glad that Shaji Kailas avoided the excessive camera gimmicks that gave one a headache in something like, say, The King and the Commissioner .

Kaduva opens with a fight scene inside a prison, which also serves as Kuriyachan's intro that begins medias res. He is there for a reason, explained later when the film visits events from a few weeks back. The central issue is Kuriyachan's tussle with the entire police force in the area -- that is, the cops who came after the Kuriyachan-friendly ones left. Leading them is DIG Joseph Chandy (Vivek Oberoi), who eventually becomes Kuriyachan's nemesis after a remark about his character that deeply offended him.

As Prithviraj joked in some of his interviews, Kaduva can be seen as the third entry in his 'ego' trilogy after Driving Licence and Ayyappanum Koshiyum .

Having said that, the main factor that works to Kaduva 's advantage is Prithviraj's casting. Kuriyachan's degree of arrogance and stubbornness warranted an actor of Prithviraj's stature. Kuriyachan is essentially what Hareendran from Driving Licence would've been if he were a wealthy planter with a family of four. And Shaji Kailas frames Kuriyachan with the same adoration that Sergio Leone had for his badass characters in Once Upon A Time in the West or The Good, the Bad and Ugly . Considering how Vivek aced the baddie game in Lucifer , I hoped to see a character with more dimensions. (Actor Vineeth has dubbed for him this time around too.) However, this is not a criticism of his performance because he behaves like a man whose ego is hurt, but as a character, he seemed so... basic. As for Jakes Bejoy's score, aside from one of the main themes and a church festival track ( 'Pala Palli Thiruppalli' ), it fails to make much of an impact. One gets the feeling that Jakes had recycled one of his previous original scores ( Kalki , perhaps?). I always say that an action movie becomes pointless if the characters -- and the actors playing them -- don't have the necessary attitude.

  8. Kaduva (2022)

The mass movie trappings are so scarce and the script so formulaic that Kaduva comes across as one of Shaji Kailas' unremarkable works from the 2000s. The differently-abled child's controversy aside, the film lacks that much needed spark between an arrogant protagonist and an egotistical antagonist which leads to eventual fireworks between them.
