Park Shin-hye and Jeon Jong-seo star in Korean thriller “The Call,” which now streams on Netflix.

How do you stop a killing in the past? That’s the central challenge of The Call , Netflix’s latest Korean film acquisition. Featuring leading starlet Park Shin-hye and rising actress Jeon Jong-seo, this thriller depicts two women who become connected across time periods through a mysterious landline telephone. When the woman of the past starts on a serial killing spree, the woman of the present must take action before it’s too late.

Even if it doesn’t aspire to push filmmaking boundaries or provide philosophical musings, the movie is a solid piece of entertainment that doesn’t feel trite, even with the preponderance of time travel murder mysteries . Through effective world-building and acting, The Call creates a distinctively chilling and suspenseful vibe that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats until its very last moments.

Telephone Time Travel

The Call begins with a young woman named Kim Seo-yeon (Park Shin-hye) getting dropped off at an ornate countryside house with creepy gothic vibes. After getting situated, Seo-yeon hears the rings of a clunky landline telephone. She picks it up, and hears the pleading cries of another young woman named Oh Young-sook (Jeon Jong-seo), who insists that her shaman mother is trying to kill her. Seo-yeon soon realizes that Oh Young-sook lived in the same house two decades ago, and the landline somehow allows the two women to connect across time.

In spite of Young-sook’s abusive shaman mother, Seo-yeon and Young-sook begin to form a bond. However, when a warning from Seo-yeon leads Young-sook to kill her mother and embark on a murder spree, Seo-yeon realizes that she may have opened a time-traversing Pandora’s Box with bloody—and personal—consequences.

Gothic Shamanistic Vibes

Time-travel murder mysteries aren’t exactly novel. The Call is actually adapted from a Puerto Rican-British film named The Caller ; Hollywood makes many instances of the subgenre. Superfans of Korean media might also feel that The Call evokes hit K-drama Signal , which featured a walkie talkie that allowed a detective in 1985 to communicate with a criminal profiler in 2015.

Despite this, The Call avoids feeling formulaic—especially for global audiences—by building a chilling world that blends reliable horror elements with Korean tradition. The house that much of the film takes place in looks a lot like your classic Western haunted house, with gothic architectural elements like hood moulds and a creepy basement to boot. As expected for a horror-tinged thriller, dark colors dominate the movie’s palette, and much of the action takes place using artificial lighting or in low light.

However, The Call goes beyond those standard horror expectations by bringing in a distinctive Korean flair. For example, one scene has Young-sook stuff a clump of tendrily seaweed into her mouth and gnaw like a deranged cthulhu . This chilling use of Korean cuisine certainly wouldn’t occur in a Hollywood horror film. Furthermore, Young-sook’s mother performs exorcisms that draw from traditional Korean shamanism—which has been enjoying a renaissance in the 21st century and influenced numerous Korean movies . Reminiscent of Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden , The Call blends “Western” visuals with distinctive Korean context to create a distinctively foreboding vibe.

Acting and Suspense

Beyond worldbuilding, The Call also features an outstanding performance from Jeon Jong-seo. This is particularly notable given Jeon’s only prior acting role was as Hae-mi, the female lead of Lee Chang-dong’s critically acclaimed film Burning .

Jeon plays Young-sook with a degree of intense unhingedness that not only contributes to The Call ’s chilling vibes, but keeps audiences guessing about what she might do next. Young-sook toggles seamlessly between victim and manipulator, crying to Seo-yeon on the phone in one moment and incapacitating victims with fire extinguisher blasts in the next. The fact that Young-sook is such a contrast from the rather carefree Hae-mi of Burning speaks positively to Jeon’s range as an actress.  Coupled with a well-crafted narrative that incorporates ample twists, Jeon’s acting gives The Call a constant current of electrifying suspense that lasts even into its post-credit scenes.

While The Call may not have the same philosophical aura as other Korean thrillers like I Saw the Devil , that probably wasn’t the film’s intent. When judged as a blockbuster, The Call is a solid piece of work. Its chilling visuals, suspenseful plot, and compelling acting should please anybody with a thirst for thrilling murder mysteries.

Pop music really can change your life. That’s part of the setup of M. Night Shyamalan’s near-miss of a thriller “Trap,” a movie that feels less like the Night Brand than a lot of his twisty ventures, a pared-down version of what he does that needed a round or two more of fleshing out its best ideas and amplifying its visual language. Night is at his best when he has a team of craftspeople to help elevate his best ideas in films like “ The Sixth Sense ,” “ Old ” (a movie that has grown on me), and “ The Village ,” but “Trap” too often lacks the craftsmanship it needs to crackle with energy and tension. Despite these missteps, Josh Hartnett almost makes “Trap” worth seeing, imbuing his character with a playfulness that can be captivating. It’s a shame his great work sometimes feels trapped in a movie that doesn’t know what to do with it.

The majority of “Trap” unfolds at a place that can be truly terrifying for a parent forced to spend hundreds of dollars on the latest pop superstar. In this case, it’s Lady Raven, played by Night’s daughter Saleka Shyamalan, a pop star shaped in the image of someone like Taylor Swift – one of those performances wherein the average age in the crowd is in the teens, and everyone knows all the words. Saleka wrote and performed most of the music, and speaking bluntly, there’s a bit too much of it, especially because it’s not quite as catchy as T. Swift.

Attending this Lady Raven show in Philly is an average guy named Cooper (Hartnett) and his teen daughter Riley ( Ariel Donoghue ). Shortly after their arrival, and with minimal character development, Cooper notices a strong police presence at the venue, including heavily armed men at all the doors. Through a brief act of politeness, he earns the trust of a vendor ( Jonathan Langdon ) who lets him on a secret – the cops and feds are there because they know that a notorious serial killer named The Butcher is in the building. Cooper is that man.

Their plan to stop every man who leaves the building and basically put them in front of ace profiler Dr. Grant (a woefully miscast Hayley Mills , likely here just because she's famous for a different "Trap" movie and Night thought that was funny) to determine guilt makes absolutely no sense. Still, people buy a ticket for a movie like “Trap” knowing the premise, and Shyamalan’s film gets by on its set-up for a while, largely because it allows Hartnett to shine through the opening act. Hartnett makes numerous smart, subtle choices that convey Cooper’s precise personality, particularly in a sly smile that reveals how much this sociopath enjoys the unexpected challenge.

Sadly, Shyamalan’s script doesn’t give Hartnett’s performance the stage it deserves. Cooper should be a cagey genius, someone who has kept his identity secret from everyone in his life and only has to do so for a bit longer to escape capture again. Instead of sketching Cooper as the smartest person in the room, Shyamalan almost comically makes him into the luckiest. Cooper keeps narrowly averting exposure through what can only be called movie magic. And when Shyamalan’s concept is forced to leave the arena, it comes apart with a series of scenes that make increasingly little sense. There are numerous times when the answer to “Why would someone do that in that situation?” can only be “Because of the movie.”

There’s an undeniably unique energy at a concert for a major pop star, a place where people scream (usually with glee), the lighting can be unpredictable, and someone in the crowd may not be all they appear to be. It’s a clever setting for a thriller, and where most of “Trap” unfolds, but Shyamalan doesn’t do enough with the geography of the space. A better film conveys how even a massive arena can feel claustrophobic when thousands of people surround you. But the cinematography by ace director of photography Sayombhu Mukdeeprom (“ Challengers ”) is oddly captivated by the large screens over the stage instead of the actual performer. This approach is surely to keep us more trapped in Cooper’s POV, but it ends up making the actual Lady Raven performance feel lackluster when we watch most of it on a screen on a screen. The editing by Noemi Katharina Preiswerk (who also cut Night’s “A Knock at the Cabin”) also lacks the hum that “Trap” really needed to work.

Ultimately, there’s something to be said for a man who can get a movie like “Trap” made in today’s market. It’s a weird, unpredictable movie not based on a pre-existing IP, and we are in an era where there are depressingly few original ideas in blockbuster filmmaking. For that alone – and the Joshaissance clearly unfolding with “ Oppenheimer ” and now this – it’s tempting to give “Trap” a pass. It’s just too bad that it ultimately feels like the word people so often throw at pop music confections: disposable.

‘Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli’ movie review: An enjoyable, informative journey of a game changer

The netflix documentary ‘modern masters: ss rajamouli’ celebrates one of india’s most popular contemporary filmmakers, interspersing it with anecdotes and trivia.

A few minutes into the docu-film Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli , producer-director Karan Johar declares that in contemporary Indian cinema, there is no bigger filmmaker than Rajamouli . The docu-film directed by Raghav Khanna and co-directed by Tanvi Ajinkya, now streaming on Netflix, ushers viewers into the happenings on the sidelines of the screening of RRR (Rise, Roar, Revolt) at TCL Chinese Theatre, Los Angeles, where the audience cheers the larger-than-life entertainment, as Rajamouli and others take in the reactions. A screening of RRR in Tokyo, Japan, elicits similar euphoria. The documentary retraces the journey of Rajamouli, whose films Baahubali and RRR are globally celebrated, to understand what made him the most popular Indian showman of our times.

For those who have closely followed Telugu cinema and the rise of Rajamouli, some of the interviews featured in the documentary might seem familiar, yet, there is enough to chew on. Actors Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, NTR and Ram Charan offer insights into how Rajamouli is a stickler for detail and settles for nothing less than 100%. NTR describes Rajamouli as a born storyteller, while Ram Charan says that there are times when he views a Rajamouli film like a third person, in awe, even when he has acted in it.

Produced by Applause Entertainment and Film Companion Studios, Modern Masters has film journalist and critic Anupama Chopra interviewing Rajamouli in Los Angeles and Tokyo, trying to explore his mindset. While Rajamouli calls himself a slave to storytelling and brushes aside the talk of him being referred to as ‘India’s James Cameron’, the documentary gets James Cameron to weigh in and share his views on Rajamouli.

Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli (English)

The documentary retraces Rajamouli’s journey from Kovvuru in Andhra Pradesh. Interviews with his family members, including his father and screenwriter Vijayendra Prasad, and older cousin and music composer M M Keeravani , offer insights into the director’s formative years. Unseen photographs of the early years of Rajamouli and his family members, interspersed with anecdotes of how storytelling was an integral part of growing up, lay the foundation for the journey ahead.

Rajamouli’s entry into the entertainment industry, from directing the television serial Santhi Nivasam ( 1999) to making his first feature film, Student No. 1 (2001), serves as the backdrop to introduce us to the early journey of composer Keeravani and actor NTR Jr.

The documentary scores by weaving together the personal and professional stories of Rajamouli and his family members, many of whom have taken on varied responsibilities in filmmaking. Modern Masters tries to understand what it entails for all the family members to work together. A few lesser-known details also come to the fore. Rajamouli’s courtship with his wife Rama, the bond he shares with his sister-in-law Srivalli, who is a mother figure to the family, and the fun details of a family vacation humanise the story of the director.

While Modern Masters celebrates Rajamouli, it does not hold back from addressing uncomfortable topics. How does the family deal with Rajamouli’s atheism? What does Rajamouli have to say about the criticism of casteism in Baahubali or the depiction of the romance between Shivudu (Prabhas) and Avantika (Tamannaah Bhatia)?

The fun moments come from the behind-the-scenes footage that shows Rajamouli on the sets of Magadheera, Baahubali and RRR , where he enacts not only the emotional scenes but also the action scenes, strapped in harnesses. There are information nuggets as well. Did you know that Magadheera (2009) was the first Telugu film to have a visual effects supervisor in its title credits?

Going beyond discussing the scale of Rajamouli’s films, the docu-film touches upon how he understands the rules of cinema, only to break them. A case in point is a scene in Eega . The anecdote also serves to explain where Rajamouli scores over other filmmakers who aspire to match his scale and vision — in putting forth a narrative that establishes an emotional connection with the audience.

The one-hour 14-minute long film serves as an introduction to Rajamouli and his films for a global audience, acknowledging his biggest films such as Magadheera, Eega, Baahubali and RRR , while it doesn’t discuss his other blockbuster Telugu hits such as Yamadonga, Chatrapathi or Vikramarkudu . Perhaps there could have been at least a passing mention of these films and the fact that the filmmaker has not had a single box office setback, to give a more wholesome insight into the fimmaker’s success.

அந்த தெருக்கூத்து கலையை வைத்து படமாக இயக்கி ரசிகர்களை கவர முடியும் என்கிற நம்பிக்கையில் சிறந்த படைப்பை கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் பாரி இளவழகன். அதன் விமர்சனம் குறித்து இங்கே பார்க்கலாம் வாங்க..

ஜமா கதை: திருவண்ணாமலை பகுதியில் 'ஜமா' - தெருக்கூத்து டிராமா ட்ரூப் நடத்தி வரும் சேத்தன் குழுவில் திரெளபதியாக நடித்து வரும் ஹீரோ கல்யாணத்துக்கு திருமணம் ஆகவில்லை. பெண்ணாக நடித்து நடித்து பெண்களுடன் பழகி வரும் அவருக்கு பெண் போன்ற நளினம் மிக்க சுபாவமே அதிகம் வந்து விட்டது தான் அதற்கு காரணம் என்பதை தெளிவாக காட்டுகின்றனர். ஆனால், அந்த நாயகனின் திறமையை அறிந்து அம்மு அபிராமி அவரை காதலிக்கிறார். காதலை தாண்டி தனியாக ஜமா நடத்த வேண்டும் என்கிற ஆசை நாயகனுக்கு உள்ளது. அர்ஜுனர் வேஷம் போட்டு நடிக்க வேண்டும் என்கிற முயற்சியில் அவருக்கு எதிரியாக சேத்தன் மாற இறுதியில் என்ன ஆனது என்பது தான் இந்த படத்தின் கதை.

பிளஸ்: இளையராஜா இசையில் இந்த படம் உருவானதே பெரிய பலம் தான். பாரி இளவழகன் தேர்ந்த நடிகராக நடித்திருப்பதை பார்க்கவே ஆச்சர்யமாகவும் விருதுகள் நிச்சயம் தேடி வரும் என்றும் கூறத் தோன்றுகிறது. வெற்றிமாறன் இயக்கிய விடுதலை படத்திற்கு பிறகு சேத்தனுக்கு செம தீனி போட்டுள்ள கதாபாத்திரம் தான் தாங்கல் தாண்டவம். மனுஷன் மிரட்டி எடுத்து விட்டார் என்று தான் சொல்ல வேண்டும். காதலியாக வரும் அம்மு அபிராமியின் நடிப்பும் இந்த படத்தில் கைதட்டல்களை பெறுகிறது. தெருக்கூத்து கலைஞர்களின் வாழ்க்கையில் நடக்கும் பெரிய கூத்து அவர்கள் போடும் தெருக்கூத்தை விட பெரியது என்பதை எடுத்துக் காட்டியுள்ள விதம் சிறப்பு.

மைனஸ்: கலை படைப்பாக நன்றாக இருந்தாலும், கமர்ஷியல் ரீதியாக ரசிகர்களை இந்த படம் தியேட்டருக்கு எப்படி கொண்டு வரும் என்பதில் தான் சவாலே இருக்கிறது. மேலும், திரைக்கதையில் சில முரண்களையும் ஆங்காங்கே காண முடிகிறது. முதல் பாதியில் கதை ஸ்லோவாக ஆரம்பித்து சூடு பிடிக்க இரண்டாம் பாதியிலும் அதே மாதிரியான ட்ரீட்மெண்ட் பலவீனமாக பார்க்கப்படுகிறது. ஆனால், எடுத்துக் கொண்ட முயற்சிக்கும் போட்டுள்ள உழைப்பிற்கும் இந்த படத்திற்கு பாராட்டுக்களும் விருதுகளும் கிடைக்கும் என எதிர்பார்க்கலாம்.

டக்கர்: திரை விமர்சனம்

குடும்பத்தின் வறிய நிலையைப் போக்க, சென்னைக்கு வந்து கால் டாக்ஸி ஓட்டுகிறார் கிராமத்து இளைஞர் குணா (சித்தார்த்). ஆள் கடத்தல் தலைவன் ராஸின் (அபிமன்யு சிங்) ஆட்கள், தொழிலதிபர் அருண் வைத்தியநாதனின் மகள் லக்கியைக் (திவ்யான்ஷா) கடத்தும்போது காப்பாற்றுகிறார் குணா.

ஆனால், வீட்டுக்குச் செல்ல மறுக்கும் லக்கி, குணாவை ‘திக்குத் தெரியாமல் ஒரு பயணம் போகலாம்’ என்று அழைக்கிறாள். உடன்படும் குணாவும், லக்கியும் அந்தப் பயணத்தில் காதலையும் காமத்தையும் வைத்து ஆடும் ஈகோ ஆட்டமே கதை.

பணம் தான் வாழ்க்கை என நினைக்கும் நாயகனுக்கும் பணம் மட்டுமே வாழ்க்கை இல்லை என உணர்ந்த நாயகிக்கும் இடையிலான உறவைச் சித்தரிக்கும் படத்தில், நகைச்சுவை, ஆக்‌ஷன் அம்சங்களைத் தூக்கலாக வைத்து விறுவிறுப்பாகக் கதை சொல்ல முயன்றிருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் கார்த்திக் ஜி.கிருஷ்.

ஏழைக் குடும்பத்து இளைஞனாக வரும் சித்தார்த், வறுமையின் சிறு சுவடும் தெரியாத தோற்றத்துடன் இருப்பது கூடுதல் நகைச்சுவை. சொகுசு கார்களை வாடகைக்கு விடும் கால் டாக்ஸி நிறுவனத்தை ஒரு சீனர், சென்னையில் நடத்துகிறார் என்பதை நம்ப முடியவில்லை. அவரையும் அவர் ஆட்களையும் வைத்து ஓர் அதிரடியான ‘குங்ஃபூ’ சண்டைக் காட்சிக்குத் திட்டமிடவே அப்படியொரு ஏற்பாடு என்று இயக்குநர் சொல்வாரானால், அந்தச் சண்டையில் புதுமை இல்லை.

மாறாக, வில்லன் ராஸின் சதுர வடிவ மேன்சனுக்குள் புகுந்து அவனது ஆட்களை நாயகன் பந்தாடும் மாடிப்படி சண்டைக் காட்சியை சுவாரஸ்யமாக வடிவமைத்துப் படமாக்கியிருக்கிறார் ‘ஸ்டன்ட்’ இயக்குநர் தினேஷ் காசி. ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சியில் அக்கறை செலுத்தத் தவறிய இயக்குநரின் அலட்சியத்துக்கு இன்னொரு எடுத்துக்காட்டு: நாயகியை வில்லனிடம் ஒப்படைத்துவிட்டுச் செல்லும் நாயகன் திரும்ப வரும் காட்சி. அப்போது அணிவகுத்து நின்று சுடும் கூலிப்படையினரின் கைத்துப்பாக்கிகளில் இருந்து சிதறும் தோட்டாக்கள் ‘ரப்பர்’ குண்டுகளா என்பதை இயக்குநர் தெளிவுபடுத்தினால் நலம்.

சித்தார்த் கிராமப்புற வறிய குடும்பத்தின் இளைஞனாகத் தன்னைக் காட்டிக்கொள்ள எந்த முயற்சியும் எடுக்கவில்லை. நடிப்பிலும் படம் முழுவதும் விரைப்பும் முறைப்புமே அதிகமாக இருக்கிறது. ‘காதல் தொடக்கப் புள்ளி, காமம் முற்றுப் புள்ளி’ என்று தத்துவம் பேசும் நவீனப் பெண்ணாக நடித்துள்ள திவ்யான்ஷாவின் நடிப்பும் உடல்மொழியும் சிறப்பு. அவர் அப்பாவாக நடித்துள்ள அருண் வைத்தியநாதன், ஆள் கடத்தல் மாபியா தலைவன் ராஸிடம் பயிற்சி எடுக்க மும்பையிலிருந்து வரும் ‘டான் மேக்ஸ்’ ஆக நடித்துள்ள யோகி பாபு, சில காட்சிகளே வந்தாலும் ஒரகடம் மாதவனாக சிரிக்க வைத்துச் செல்லும் முனீஸ்காந்த், சித்தார்த்தின் உயிர் நண்பன், பண்பலை அறிவிப்பாளர் லாடுவாக வரும் விக்னேஷ் ஆகியோர் கலகலப்புக்கு உத்தரவாதம் அளித்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

கிராமத்திலும் மாநகரத்திலும் நாயகன் படும் பாடுகள் 20 நிமிடம், வில்லனின் கடத்தல் லீலையை நிறுவ 10 நிமிடம், யோகிபாபுவுக்கு 10 நிமிடம் என 40 நிமிடங்களை முதன்மையான ஒருவரிக் கதைக்கே செலவிட்டிருந்தால் உண்மையாகவே ‘டக்க’ரான காதல், ஆக்‌ஷன் படமாகியிருக்கும்.
