An illustrated cover of the book The Flimflam Man

Book review: The FlimFlam Man

A review of 'The Flimflam Man' by Darleen Bailey Beard, illustrated by Eileen Christelow.

Set in 1950s Wetumka, Oklahoma, this book is based upon the real life origins behind a parade called 'Sucker Day' that continues to this day.

10 year-old Bobbie Jo lives with her poor, widowed mother and dreams of a day when she can talk fluently. Feisty and kind-hearted, Bobbie Jo initially clashes with vulnerable bully Clara Jean who teases her about her speech.

Luckily, a stranger intervenes and offers Bobbie Jo two free tickets to see an upcoming circus he is advertising. The whole town is excited and buys tickets in advance.

Bobbie Jo enlists Clara Jean to help her and work together to advertise the circus. An unlikely friendship develops, not only with her former bully but also with the stranger, Mr Morrison. He connects with Bobbie Jo about his own speech difficulties growing up and shares his secrets as to how he overcame them.

But there are rumours that there is no circus and that Mr Morrison is a 'flim flam man' – a person who cheats people out of money in exchange for goods that never appear. Is it true? Is her new friend a liar?

Bobbie Jo's stammer and her desire to seek support is manipulated by Mr Morrison and used to build a false sense of trust. However, the moral of the story is that every cloud has a silver lining.

This is a short story suitable for key stage 2 children, that focuses on themes of trust, kindness and friendship. Stammering is touched upon throughout the story and the book provides a good opportunity to talk to children about Speech, Language and Communication Needs, bullying and inclusion.

This book was reviewed for STAMMA by Sarah Moriarty, a parent of a child who stammers. Sarah has a website, SLCN Stories , where she reviews inclusive stories aimed at raising awareness and supporting children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs.

Movie Reviews

Tv/streaming, collections, chaz's journal, great movies, contributors, the flim-flam man.

Now streaming on:

Some of the funniest scenes in " Dr. Strangelove " involved George C. Scott as the Army chief of staff. During a war-council, he stuffed gum into his mouth, whispered to his mistress over the hot line and tried to explain to the President just why it was that, through a lamentable oversight, the world was sort of doomed.

Scott had the role just right. His military man was filled with official bluster and sly rascality. So you'd think Scott would be a great choice for the title role of "The Flim-Flam Man." But he isn't quite.

The movie is about a veteran con man who journeys through the small towns of the South, performing the classic repertory of the confidence game: card tricks, fake identities, the lost billfold gambit, the bargain to be had on a shady deal. A young Army dropout ( Michael Sarrazin ) signs on as his straight man and they fleece the suckers until love appears for Sarrazin in the person of Sue Lyon .

The movie was shot on location, largely in Kentucky, and it gains a real feeling of authenticity. These are real crossroads stores and real wide-eyed rednecks, watching the city slicker shuffle the cards. And a lot of the episodes are hilarious. I announced some time ago, in connection with " Casino Royale " (1967) I think, that chase scenes had just about had it as laugh-getters in the movies. Wrong again. There is a chase scene in this one that's a classic. The flim-flam man, dressed, as a minister, and his pupil, dressed as an accident victim, steal a car and lead the sheriff on a brilliantly photographed chase down the sidewalks and through the watermelon wagons of the South.

There are also some nicely directed scenes in which Scott gradually overcomes the suspicions of his victims, wins their confidence, allows his straight man to win a few bucks and then, oh, so innocently asks a tobacco farmer if he'd care to speculate as to which card was the queen.

But, in the end, Scott doesn't quite come off as the flim-flam man. I think the mistake was to make him so old (past 60) and flamboyant, instead of letting him play the role as a smooth and oily character (as he was in " The Hustler ").

But you know who might have made a good flim-flam man? Harry Morgan , who plays the sheriff, and who is Sergeant Friday's sidekick on " Dragnet ." With a cigar stuck in his mouth, he looks like about the shiftiest guy I can imagine. Except for W. C. Fields, come to think of it.

Dad wasn't home that day. For reasons yet unclear to me, he came home less and less often as the months passed. I remember seeing my father only twice after the snow covered the ground. One time, he and Uncle Tom showed u...

THE BALLAD OF THE FLIM-FLAM MAN

by Guy Owen ‧ RELEASE DATE: N/A

Guy Owen he wan't know how to write without he had read a book by the name of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mr. Mark Twain. Only thing, he should have stole the Mississippi River too while he was at it. Owen tells his story in the locale of Cape Fear County down in North Carolina, round near Ellers Bend. It's all about this flim-flam artist, Mordecai Jones, who is a con man like Mr. Twain's the Duke and the Dauphin rolled into one. He's got more names than a body can rightly remember. He teams up with this AWOL soldier, Curley Treadaway, who is pretending to tell the story about their rascal adventures. This guy Curley plays the guitar and once sang on ""Grand Ol' Opry"" but he is a green hayseed. Well, old Mordecai teaches Curley a bagful of bunco tricks and they keep making their marks (victims), but then they always seem to lose their money and have to start over. Finally, Mordecai figures a scheme to bilk this mark of $20,000. Just as he and Curley succeed, the mark shows his badge. Mordecai escapes from jail but Curley stays caught. But he gets released on probation and an army discharge. Mr. Twain he wrote mostly a true book, but this one is mainly a lot of stretchers and you can't believe none of it.
