Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

• Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services) 
• Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them. 

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers. 

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

• Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want 
• Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

• Best for: Science homework help
• Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well. 

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded. 

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.  

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option. 

#2: No Clarification

In the second half of the 15th century, the Novgorod Republic ceased to exist in the struggle with Moscow principality. In 1584, Arkhangelsk was founded at Cape Purnavolok.

Until the end of the 17th century, Arkhangelsk remained the main port of Russia. About 80% of foreign trade turnover was made via Arkhangelsk. Bread, hemp, timber, resin, furs and other products were exported from here. During the reign of Peter I, the importance of Arkhangelsk increased because of the development of shipbuilding.

More Historical Facts…

In the early 18th century, the current territory of the region was part of a huge Arkhangelogorodskaya gubernia (province), and then, until 1784 - part of the Vologda region ruled by a governor-general. In 1796, it became a separate Arkhangelsk gubernia.

During a long time, only timber and wood processing industries were developed in the province. Fishing and hunting were underdeveloped. Up to the end of the 1920s, most of the territory was part of Arkhangelsk gubernia.

January 14, 1929, Arkhangelskaya, Vologodskaya and Severo-Dvinskaya gubernias formed Severny (Northern) krai. July 15, 1929, a separate Nenets national okrug (Nenets autonomous okrug today) was formed. After Komi ASSR was formed on December 5, 1936, the Severny krai was reformed into the Severnaya region, which was divided afterwards into the Arkhangelsk and Vologda regions on September 23, 1937.

In Soviet times, Arkhangelsk Oblast turned into an industrially developed region: pulp and paper industry, timber industry, fishing, flax growing and processing, military industries (Plesetsk cosmodrome, shipbuilding in Severodvinsk, nuclear testing ground on Novaya Zemlya Island).

Arkhangelsk Oblast - Features

Arkhangelsk Oblast is the largest subject in the European part of the Russian Federation and the largest province in Europe. The area of this region is larger than the area of France (547,030 sq. km. excluding overseas territories) and Spain (504,782 sq. km.).

Arkhangelsk Oblast is located in the north of the East European Plain. The territory of the region is washed by the White, Barents and Kara Seas. Arkhangelsk Oblast is located close to the Arctic seas and far away from the warm North Atlantic Current (a branch of the Gulf Stream).

The climate is temperate continental, in the north-west - the sea, to the north-east - the subarctic. Summers are cool, winters are long and cold. The weather is very changeable. The average temperature in January is minus 12-18 degrees Celsius, in July - from plus 16 degrees Celsius in the south to plus 8-10 degrees Celsius in the north.

The largest cities and towns of the region are Arkhangelsk (342,000), Severodvinsk (180,000), Kotlas (62,200), Novodvinsk (36,800), Koryazhma (34,800), Mirny (33,500).

Arkhangelsk Oblast is bordered by the Republic of Karelia in the west, the Murmansk region in the north (the border runs through the White Sea), the Vologda and Kirov regions in the south, the Komi Republic in the east and north-east (Nenets Autonomous District), the Tyumen region (Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District) and Krasnoyarsk krai (the border runs through the Kara Sea) in the east.

Arkhangelsk Oblast has a developed fishing, forest, woodworking, pulp and paper industries. In the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (both a separate subject of the federation and part of the Arkhangelsk region) there are large deposits of oil and natural gas (Prirazlomnoye field).

About 100 km north of Arkhangelsk, in the Primorsky and Mezensky districts, the Europe’s largest diamond deposits are located (the diamond deposits named after M.V. Lomonosov and V. Grib). Severodvinsk is the center of Russian atomic shipbuilding.

Attractions of Arkhangelsk Oblast

In this region, there are a lot of wonderful and special places: deep rivers and pristine lakes, enchanting northern forests and cold Arctic seas, Pomor villages, ancient churches and magnificent monasteries.

Arkhangelsk Oblast is the perfect place for lovers of cycling, water tours on kayaks and catamarans, fans of kayaking and rafting, hunters and anglers, hikers and cavers.

Solovetsky Islands . The main attraction and spiritual center of the islands is the Solovetsky monastery. In 1992, the complex of monuments of the Solovetsky Museum-Reserve was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Plesetsk Cosmodrome . Located about 180 kilometers south of Arkhangelsk, near the town of Mirny, it is a scientific and technical complex that performs a variety of tasks in the interests of the Russian Armed Forces as well as for peaceful purposes.

The city of Severodvinsk is a naval base of the Russian Northern Fleet (mainly nuclear submarines).

The historic centers of the Arkhangelsk region are Kargopol , Kholmogory and Solvychegodsk . You can find medieval wooden chapels there.

On Rudolf Island, part of the archipelago of Franz Josef Land, the extreme northern point of Russia, Europe and Eurasia is located - Cape Fligeli , and on Severny Island in the archipelago of Novaya Zemlya - the extreme eastern point of Europe - Cape Flissingsky .

Kenozersky National Park . The park is a natural and historical-cultural complex, located in the south-western part of Arkhangelsk Oblast. Pinezhsky Reserve, the national parks “Russian Arctic” and “Onega Pomorie” are also located on the territory of the oblast.

Novaya Zemlya - an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean between the Barents and Kara seas. September 17, 1954, the Soviet nuclear test site was opened there.

Yup, AI is basically just a homework-cheating machine

• AI promises to change the world — but so far, it's being used a lot for homework help.
• OpenAI has a tool to detect whether something was written by ChatGPT but hasn't released it.
• Sam Altman, hero of the common student, scourge of the AP History teacher.

When ChatGPT first came out in late 2022, it was instantly clear there was one immediate and obvious use: writing term papers.

This has been a thorn in the side of teachers and professors . But as generative AI is more widely adopted, has it become more than just a homework helper ?

Two new pieces of information point us toward a conclusion we probably all knew in our hearts: Chatbots and generative AI are a bonanza for students looking for writing help.

First, The Washington Post just published " What do people really use chatbots for? It's a lot of sex and homework ." It looked at a large research dataset of AI chatbot conversations called WildChat and categorized the conversations. It found that the most-common use — at 21% — was "creative writing and role play." A sample of what that might be: asking the bot to write fan fiction, movie scripts, or Dungeons & Dragons characters.

The second-most-common category of chatbot conversations — at 18% — was for homework help. (One example: "Explain the Monroe Doctrine in a sentence.")

The other, lesser-used categories included things like search, translation, and coding/programming use.

Aside from the Post's reporting, there's another new reason to suspect that homework "help" — and maybe cheating! — is a massively popular use for ChatGPT and other text-based AI.

The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI was developing a tool that could detect writing that used ChatGPT — but it won't release the tool (yet).

The tool would make it so that ChatGPT creates a sort of "watermark" in the way it chooses words. The watermark would be undetectable to human eyes but could be picked up by AI — and it would be 99.9% accurate in being able to tell if something was written by ChatGPT or a real human.

Still, OpenAI hasn't released this tool, much to some people's frustration inside the company, according to the report. A spokesperson for OpenAI told the Journal that the company had concerns the tool could hurt non-native English speakers who use ChatGPT. "The text watermarking method we're developing is technically promising but has important risks we're weighing while we research alternatives," the spokesperson told the Journal.

OK, reasonable. I think we all like the idea of OpenAI taking its time and thinking long and hard about the potential harms of releasing a new tool.

But here's the other part: The report said, "OpenAI surveyed ChatGPT users and found 69% believe cheating detection technology would lead to false accusations of using AI. Nearly 30% said they would use ChatGPT less if it deployed watermarks and a rival didn't. " (Emphasis mine.)

That sounds like a pretty good sign that "cheating on my homework" is a pretty popular use of ChatGPT — and OpenAI knows it.

When Sam Altman was seen driving a multimillion-dollar Koenigsegg Regera , the most common comments on TikTok were things like, "Bro carried me through half of my classes last year I hope he enjoys that beauty."

There's also evidence from last summer that ChatGPT use dropped as soon as summer vacation started — a good indication that student use was a big driver.

Of course, there are plenty of unique and wonderful uses for generative-AI text creation, like writing a fan letter to your favorite Olympian .

I admit that my skepticism about how useful ChatGPT is other than just a homework-cheating machine comes with my own baggage: AI is an existential threat to my job as a person who types words, and I don't mind writing things myself. Although I get to write things like this instead of, say, a three-paragraph summary of the Monroe Doctrine. If I were an 11th grader right now, I suspect I'd probably be pretty enthused by it.

'It Ends with Us': Five major changes between the book and movie

Spoiler alert! The following story contains major plot details about the "It Ends with Us " book and movie (now in theaters).

Blake Lively is back on the big screen.

The “ Deadpool & Wolverine ” actress has her first leading role in four years in “It Ends with Us," the hotly anticipated adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel . Like the book, the movie follows a flower shop owner named Lily Blossom Bloom (Lively), who falls in love with a dashing neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni), and reconnects with her stoic childhood sweetheart, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar). The romantic drama also features a star-studded supporting cast, with Jenny Slate as Ryle’s sister, Allysa, and Hasan Minhaj as his brother-in-law, Marshall.

Directed by Baldoni, the heart-wrenching film is a largely faithful retelling of Hoover’s book, grappling with the insidious nature of domestic violence and cycles of abuse across generations. Here are some of the biggest changes from page to screen:

What's the biggest difference between the 'It Ends with Us' book and movie?

Perhaps the most significant change between the book and movie is in how Lily perceives Ryle’s abuse. Through a series of quick cuts and deceptive camera angles, the film plays on Lily’s uncertainties: Did Ryle actually mean to strike her after burning his hand, or was that just an accident? Did Lily merely slip on the stairs during an argument, or did Ryle deliberately push her? Lily is continually in denial until the movie’s final third, when a disturbing montage shows her husband's assaults as they really happened.

But in the book, Ryle's misconduct is not a gradual realization for Lily. Instead, she calls him out after each incident and warns him that she’ll leave the next time he abuses her. She first tries to leave him after her violent fall, but then chooses to forgive Ryle, who’s traumatized by his brother’s death. She reasons there is good in him, and that he can still change. But when Ryle later tries to rape her and she lands in the hospital, Lily decides she’s had enough.

Does the novel end differently than the film?

The book draws out Lily’s breakup with Ryle, as he flees to Europe for three months and she confronts him upon his return. (“I wish this baby wasn’t yours,” Lily says angrily, after he shows up at her apartment unannounced.) They eventually agree to divorce, and the novel ends with a scene of Ryle and Lily amicably co-parenting, just before she rekindles her flame with Atlas.

The movie ends on a similarly romantic note, as Atlas and Lily run into each other at a farmers market and decide to give romance another shot. But it also adds much-needed closure for Lily and her mother, Jenny (Amy Morton). Jenny endured a lifetime of abuse from her husband, and Lily resentfully tried and failed to eulogize her dad at his funeral.

Toward the end of the film, Lily and Jenny visit her father’s grave along with Lily’s young daughter, Emerson. After Lily leaves her blank eulogy notes on his tombstone, the Bloom family embraces and walks away. It’s a poignant moment for the three generations of women, signaling a fresh start as they leave their trauma behind them.

Does Ellen DeGeneres make a cameo in 'It Ends with Us?'

If you haven’t read “ It Ends with Us ,” you could never imagine what a huge role Ellen DeGeneres plays in the story. (Yes, really.) In the book, young Lily recounts her entire childhood in a series of journal entries addressed to the former daytime talk-show host. Lily and Atlas also remind each other to “ just keep swimming ” – a hopeful mantra by DeGeneres’ “Finding Nemo” character, Dory. As adults, Atlas even gifts Lily a signed copy of DeGeneres’ memoir, “Seriously … I’m Kidding.”

Wisely, the movie does away with the whole DeGeneres conceit. The comedian’s reputation has been sullied since “It Ends with Us” was published in 2016, and her talk show fizzled out amid scandal in 2022 . Instead, Lily and Atlas’ high-school courtship is now told through a series of straightforward flashbacks.

Although, there is still one DeGeneres Easter egg in the film: The first time Atlas comes over to Lily’s house, she’s on the couch watching “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

Which book characters don't appear in the movie?

Streamlining the story from page to screen, a few memorable characters have been cut along the way. The film axes Devin, Lily’s gay BFF who makes Ryle jealous by pretending to be her boyfriend. There is also no Lucy, Lily’s former roommate who winds up working at her flower shop. Ryle’s mom and dad are missing from the movie as well: Instead of getting engaged at his parents’ apartment, Ryle now proposes to Lily in Allysa’s hospital room shortly after she gives birth. (Sorry, but did he really have to upstage his sister like that?)

How old are Lily (Blake Lively) and Ryle (Justin Baldoni)?

Fans of “It Ends with Us” were initially miffed by Lively’s casting. After all, Lily is described as having “red hair and fair skin” in the book, whereas Lively is unequivocally blond (a fact that the movie hardly disguises). Also, Lily is 23 and Ryle is 30 when the novel starts, while in the movie, both characters are in their mid-30s.

Baldoni and Hoover recently defended aging up the characters, saying it would naturally take a long time for Ryle to become a prominent board-certified neurosurgeon. They also wanted Lily to be someone with life experience, who is comfortable and confident in herself by the time she meets Ryle.

“I’ve heard people say, ‘Why wouldn’t you just leave? Why would she stay?’” Baldoni told Variety magazine last month. “We know that abuse happens to women of all ages. But it also happens to powerful women. It happens to very strong women. It happens to affluent women.”

They can help survivors develop a plan to achieve safety for themselves and their children.

Safe Horizon's  hotline offers crisis counseling, safety planning, and assistance finding shelters 1(800) 621-HOPE (4673). It also has a  chat feature  where you can reach out for help from a computer or phone confidentially. 

Survivors can also call the New York City  Anti-Violence Project's  24/7 English/Spanish hotline at 212-714-1141 and get support. If calling is not safe but email is possible, make a report at  avp.org/get-help  and leave safe contact information, and someone will reach out.

National Statistical

News and insight from the office for national statistics, updating the picture of post-pandemic uk economic growth.

Today we’ve released our annual revisions of the UK’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) covering the period up to 2022. As more data have become available we’ve been able to refine our initial estimates of economic activity and update our assumptions about the relative size of each sector since the pandemic. Craig McLaren explains this regular process and how the picture of the economy as a whole has changed. 

The last few years have been challenging for national statistical institutes around the world due to the measurement difficulties posed by the impact of the pandemic. Like the UK, many countries have significantly revised their initial estimates of the sharp economic contraction COVID brought and the scale of the subsequent recovery as some normality returned.

Revisions are a regular, essential part of the process of producing high quality GDP estimates, something we explored in more detail in our podcast on communicating uncertainty released in March.

What’s changed this time?  

While this year the revisions for 2020 and 2021 are very small, we have seen our estimate for 2022 rise from 4.3% to 4.8%, which is a little larger than usual.

This reflects the more comprehensive annual survey responses – that take a while to collect and process – showing the economy did better than our initial estimates suggested, as well as the sizeable changes in the way the economy now operates since the COVID-19 pandemic. If we compare revisions as a proportion of growth in the relevant year, the revision in 2022 is only slightly larger than the historical average.

Sectoral shifts in the economy 

In addition, we have updated our assumptions about the ‘weight’ we give each industry within GDP for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. While we usually update these annually, using weights for the pandemic years when much of the economy was closed or operating very differently, would have skewed our overall estimates.

International guidance from the IMF at the time noted this challenge and recommended pausing weighting updates until activity had settled into a post COVID norm. While the UK generally updates the weights on an annual basis, other countries can take up to five years to make these changes, which need to be considered when making international comparisons.

So today we’ve updated the weights for the first time since 2019, which has had a notable impact on our estimates, given the significant changes to how our economy has operated due to both the pandemic and impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

For example, we have seen big rises in the weight of mining and quarrying – given the large increase in gas and oil prices, and this sector is now larger in 2022 relative to other sectors.

In addition, the health sector, which increased its share of economic activity a lot during the pandemic, remains larger in 2022 than its long-term average as the sector catches up post-pandemic.

Conversely manufacturing, which is now seeing significantly increased costs and therefore adding less to the economy overall, and the accommodation and food sector, which was hit hard in the pandemic and has still not returned to pre-pandemic levels in 2022, are both relatively smaller than they were in 2019.

These figures have gone through our comprehensive annual ‘supply use’ balancing process that allows us to confront and reconcile all of our different data sources. However, at this point they can only be produced up to 2022, as it takes us several years to receive and process all the information we need to undergo this process.

The ONS remains committed, however, to improving early access to key datasets so that more data are available faster and uncertainty in our earlier estimates is reduced.

Recent revisions have reflected the widespread challenges of estimation during the pandemic period and recovery. While previous analysis shows that if you look at revisions outside of the pandemic period, they are on average both small and unbiased, this has not always been the case for the pandemic period. We will explore this in more detail when we update our usual analysis of revisions  in the autumn.

On 30 September, we will be extending these revisions to include the latest periods when we will bring our 2023 and 2024 GDP estimates into line with today’s updated and reweighted data, which will also include additional data.

We look forward to sharing these new statistics when our fully revised GDP dataset – as part of the 2024 Blue Book dataset – is published in September this year.

Youth development specialist promotes holistic approach to healing, growth of individuals, communities amid poverty, drugs, trauma

A series focused on the personal side of Harvard research and teaching.

During his sophomore year at San Diego State University,  Shawn Ginwright  worked at a middle school. He befriended and mentored a student there named Michael, and on the day when the two were to visit Ginwright’s college, Michael didn’t show up. He had been killed in the driveway of his apartment building. He was 15 years old.

The young man’s death stunned all those around him, including Ginwright, who began to see how much trauma and hopelessness Black youth face amid the poverty and crime that plague many urban neighborhoods. He felt that he’d found his calling.

“What happened to Michael shaped how I thought about my career and how I wanted to spend my life,” said Ginwright, Jerome T. Ginwright went on to pursue a doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley, and become a scholar of youth development and social and emotional learning. With his wife, Nedra, he launched a summer camp in San Diego in 1989 for Black youth to offer resources for healing and growth, and later, he founded a  nonprofit  in Oakland, California, to empower marginalized youth.

Ginwright has written four books on Black youth development, youth activism, and urban education. He is known for his theories of radical healing and healing-centered pedagogy, which embrace a holistic approach to addressing the challenges faced by American youth. His ideas also serve as a rebuttal to programs that focus on prevention through discipline and fear.

“Radical healing was a response to the dearth of programmatic ways of thinking about Black youth and to the belief that Black and marginalized youth are problems rather than possibilities,” said Ginwright. “It also came from the idea that you must understand what’s going on in young people’s lives and how they experience trauma. Some youths are not just thinking about suspensions or dropping out of school; they’re worried about being shot or killed.”

Ginwright’s approach seeks to overcome the limitations of a trauma-informed focus in youth development programs. His thinking sprang from a conversation he had with a young man who was participating in an initiative he was running in Oakland in the early 2000s. 

“This young man said to me, ‘I don’t like to always talk about the worst thing that ever happened to me; I want to talk about my dreams and hopes,’” said Ginwright. “That made me think about the gaps in trauma-informed approaches because naming somebody a trauma victim does not acknowledge their assets. You can be wounded but still have assets, dreams and hopes. Healing-centered engagement involves a more holistic way to support young people who experience trauma.”

Around that time, Ginwright also experienced something of a personal crisis as he was dealing with the pressures of pursuing a doctorate, raising money for youth programs, and caring for his young family. 

“I was so stressed, and one night I just woke up crying, uncontrollably sobbing,” he said. “I shared that with the young people one Saturday morning, and it allowed them to see me as a human being. Part of our journey working with young people is how we must be human with one another.” 

Through his work, rooted in more than 30 years of experience, Ginwright hopes to both broaden the concept of behavioral and mental health and shift the approach that considers trauma episodic and only experienced by individuals. Trauma can be also environmental, said Ginwright, and healing needs to happen at the individual, interpersonal, and institutional levels.

“Behavioral and mental health is also the fact that young people may have shame because their mother uses drugs, or they’re not sure where they’ll be living next week,” said Ginwright. “It’s racism and discrimination. The fact that young Black people walk into a store and are followed around also affects their mental health.” 

He noted that “part of what I’m trying to get people to understand is that we have to widen our understanding of what creates trauma to come up with responses that are holistic because while we need to treat individuals, the entire neighborhood, the entire ZIP code is experiencing trauma.”

Christina Villarreal is a lecturer at the Ed School who specializes in ethnic studies in education, teacher education, and trauma and healing. She says that Ginwright, who was her master’s thesis adviser at San Francisco State University and a member of her doctoral dissertation committee at Columbia, has helped bring about change in the field. 

“He is somebody who has pushed against pathology, which happens a lot in our field — a tendency to focus on the problem rather than solutions,” said Villarreal.

Working with young people to help them heal from trauma requires imagination, said Ginwright, who would like to see behavioral and mental health conversations taking place in basketball courts, beauty salons, or barber shops.

“Young people experience all kinds of trauma, and they have no way to talk about it,” said Ginwright. “When we created our first camp in San Diego, we were overwhelmed by the amount of sorrow, hopelessness, joy, and beauty that these young people brought in.” 

He also noted that transforming the lives of individual young people pays an additional dividend: It helps change entire communities. 

“I changed listening to their stories year after year after year, and [it] gave me a sense of compassion, empathy and joy,” said Ginwright. “Because when you see young people who have experienced trauma and still desire joy and want to be embraced and be hugged, that shifts you. What I’ve learned is that it’s not just what we do for young people, but it’s also what they do for us. There’s a relationship between our own healing and the healing of young people.”

Anna Marie Tendler Knows You Think Her Book Is About John Mulaney

Ms. Tendler was a regular subject in her famous ex-husband’s stand-up. After a public divorce, tabloids have framed her new memoir as a tell-all about their relationship, but readers might be surprised by what they find.

In the summer of 2021, Anna Marie Tendler went on a first date at Ernesto’s, a Spanish restaurant on the Lower East Side, and made small talk about the menu with a man she had met online and vetted on a FaceTime call.

Then she launched into an unexpected monologue.

She told him that six months earlier, she had checked into a psychiatric hospital for suicidal thoughts, self-harm and disordered eating. Her germophobia had kept her from eating indoors since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Also, she was in the middle of a divorce.

“An absolute slam dunk,” Ms. Tendler writes of the date in her new memoir, “Men Have Called Her Crazy,” out on Aug. 13 from Simon & Schuster.

Ms. Tendler, 39, an artist whose work includes Victorian lampshades and morose photography , may be most widely known for her marriage to the comedian John Mulaney and its very public collapse in 2021. Their relationship is conspicuously absent from the book, in which Ms. Tendler refers to her marriage and divorce only a handful of times; Mr. Mulaney is never identified by name.

The book offers a portrait of a mental health crisis that is laced with dark humor, and tells the story of a woman no longer able to contain her fury toward the opposite sex. Ms. Tendler is aware that readers who come in looking for a tell-all about Mr. Mulaney may initially be disappointed — but she hopes they will connect to the version of her that they find on the page instead.

“I have no desire to cater to the one single thing that people might know about me,” Ms. Tendler said in an interview in July, at a kitschy diner about an hour from her home in Connecticut.
