Dissertation, /ˈdɪsərˌteɪʃən/, /dɪsəˈteɪʃən/.

Other forms: dissertations

A dissertation is a long piece of writing that uses research to bring to light an original idea. Don't go to grad school unless you're prepared to write, say, a 300-page dissertation on some topic.

In everyday speech, we sometimes accuse people of delivering dissertations when they overload us with dull information. If you're annoyed with a long memo from your office manager about keeping the kitchen clean, you could mutter to a coworker, “How’d you like that dissertation Felix posted about rinsing out our mugs?”

  • noun a treatise advancing a new point of view resulting from research; usually a requirement for an advanced academic degree synonyms: thesis see more see less type of: tractate , treatise a formal exposition

  • If the database assigns publication numbers to dissertations and theses, include the publication number in parentheses after the title of the dissertation or thesis without italics.
  • Include the description “Doctoral dissertation” or “Master’s thesis” followed by a comma and the name of the institution that awarded the degree. Place this information in square brackets after the dissertation or thesis title and any publication number.
  • In the source element of the reference, provide the name of the database, repository, or archive.
  • The same format can be adapted for other published theses, including undergraduate theses, by changing the wording of the bracketed description as appropriate (e.g., “Undergraduate honors thesis”).
  • Include a URL for the dissertation or thesis if the URL will resolve for readers (as shown in the Miranda and Zambrano-Vazquez examples).
  • If the database or archive requires users to log in before they can view the dissertation or thesis, meaning the URL will not work for readers, end the reference with the database name (as in the Kabir example).

Koh awarded IMLS grant to connect and advance library makerspaces

Kyungwon Koh, associate professor and director of the Champaign-Urbana (CU) Community Fab Lab, has been awarded a $149,995 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services ( IMLS grant LG-256680-OLS-24 ). The award is part of the National Leadership Grants for Libraries program, which supports "projects that address critical needs of the library and archives fields and have the potential to advance practice in these professions to strengthen library and archival services for the American public."

The goal of the IMLS-funded project, "National Forum to Connect and Advance Library Makerspaces," is to enhance the capacity of makerspaces to meet the evolving needs of their communities as well as advance the maker movement nationally. Koh's team will include co-principal investigator Rebecca M. Teasdale, assistant professor of educational psychology at the University of Illinois Chicago, and project coordinator Emilie Butt, instruction and engagement coordinator at the Fab Lab. The researchers will collaborate with partners from the American Library Association; Nation of Makers, a national nonprofit supporting America's maker organizations; and Library Makers, a community of library makerspace professionals.

According to Koh, with the remarkable growth of makerspaces over the past decade, there is a critical need to reflect on the achievements and challenges within the maker movement in libraries and strategically envision the future of library makerspaces.

"Initially seen as a trend, makerspaces have now become a staple in various types of libraries—public, school, academic, special, rural, and urban—and come in diverse forms. As of 2024, many U.S. libraries have integrated makerspaces or maker programs as standard services, similar to reference or interlibrary loan services," said Koh.

To develop and realize a vision for the future of library makerspaces, the project will enhance coordination among key maker groups that provide leadership to library makerspaces. Over the next eighteen months, the project team will convene a series of online and in-person forums, inviting all stakeholders—including current and prospective library maker professionals, as well as educators and researchers in higher education—to engage in dialogue.

Koh's areas of expertise include digital youth, the maker movement, learning and community engagement through libraries, human information behavior, and competencies for information professionals. She holds an MS and PhD in library and information studies from Florida State University.

Title : Mapping Brain Tissue Microstructure in Epilepsy with Multi-modal MRI

Abstract : Developing non-invasive methods to reliably map features of brain tissue microstructure is valuable for early diagnosis and the investigation of brain mechanisms in both health and disease. In this regard, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides a unique ability to sensitize the signal to the presence of microstructural components within each voxel.

My doctoral work consists of three studies. First, we showed how diffusion-sensitized MRI can be used to discern microstructural abnormalities in the hippocampal subfields indicative of mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS). Our results suggest that diffusion metric analysis at the subfield level, especially in dentate gyrus, can be beneficial for clinical confirmation of MTS.

Second, we leveraged magnetization transfer and diffusion MRI for estimation of g-ratios across major white matter tracts in a mouse model of generalized epilepsy with progressive absence seizures. Our findings revealed widespread myelin structural changes that are specific to the absence seizure network and demonstrated the potential utility and importance of MRI-based g-ratio estimation to non-invasively detect myelin plasticity.

In the third study, we showed how deep learning can improve microstructural feature extraction from MRI data. We presented a novel approach that combines synthetic MRI generation and transfer learning to allow a reliable inference of brain tissue microstructure with a minimal amount of paired MRI-histology data. Our approach showed decreased error compared to biophysical model fitting and increased prediction capabilities that are consistent with electron microscopy validation and previous biological studies.
